As Micanopy's Cemetery Runs Out Of Space, Seminole Battleground May Prevent Expansion - WUFT

Battle of Welika Pond took place on July 19, 1836. It was a part of the Second Seminole War and was fought between the Seminoles and the U.S. Army. “Due to the historic nature of the adjoining property… they will need a different solution,” Mayor Joseph Aufmuth said. Aufmuth has a history of preserving important archaeological sites. He led the effort to form Micanopy’s Native American Heritage Preserve, a 16-acre site that contains part of the land where the Battle of Micanopy took place in 1836. “The people of Micanopy also recognize the importance of saving our shared Micanopy history,” Aufmuth said. Proponents of the expansion believe that moving into a different territory would prevent tampering with current burial sites. “There are burials in the cemetery that are not marked, and no one wants to dig into one of those graves by accident when digging new graves,” said John E. Thrasher III, Micanopy Historical Society Museum and Archives curator. For the proposal to pass, the Micanopy Town Commission will have to vote to transfer or sell the three town-owned plots to the Micanopy Historic Cemetery Association. As of now, no property deeds or rights to the parcels in question have been transferred to any organization. No official action pertaining to any town parcel has occurred. Some areas within the cemetery are fenced off, while others have tombstones made up of a tree trunk. Stray cats roam the area and fresh flowers are arranged all around. Lloyd, who has family members in the cemetery dating back to the mid-1800s, said she wants her lineage to be laid to rest in the same burial ground. “I do not as of yet have a plot for my own family,” Lloyd said.” The expansion may be the only place for our final resting places.” ...

Retired Circuit Judge Clarence Johnson Jr. dies at age 89, left legacy in court system - Florida Today

Florida Legislature that it would be a good idea to create an 18th Judicial Circuit, consisting of Brevard and Seminole counties, rather than those counties being part of the 9th Judicial Circuit that is centered in Orlando. More: Apollo 50: See the events honoring the anniversary of the moon landing One of Johnson's three sons, Jay Johnson, said his father lived a life full of adventure. "He had a bit of a Tom Sawyer type of existence" as a boy, Jay Johnson said, developing his love of fishing and the outdoors in general, growing up in the rural Florida communities of Trenton and Alachua. The late judge's daughter, Jan Hulse of Vermont, recalled that, throughout her father's life, "he just loved being on the water with his family and friends," especially fishing for trout and bass. Their father liked to tell the story of arguing his first legal case at age 6, when he came to the defense of a ice delivery man he knew whom he felt was wrongly jailed for being drunk. More: Possible tropical depression a rainmaker for Florida as models shift west WeatherTiger "I immediately went down and told the sheriff, whom I knew, that my friend did not deserve to be in jail, that he was a good man, had made a mistake, and that I knew he'd never do it again," Clarence Johnson wrote in his memoirs. "The sheriff released him." Johnson became a Florida House of Representatives page at age 13, after he went to Tallahassee to lobby legislators, asking them to select him from among 35 candidates for eight page positions. He became a messenger in the sergeant-at-arms office at age 15. Johnson was a four-sport athlete in high school (football, basketball, softball and track). He then attended the University of Florida, where he received a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1955 and a law degree in 1958. His undergraduate work was interrupted by four years of service in the Air Force during the Korean War era. More: Arrest of ex-Palm Bay official Isnardi could have political implications in city, county government Following law school, Johnson began work as a lawyer for a West Palm Beach law firm. In 1961, he opened a branch office of that firm in Rockledge. Jay Johnson said his father sought to become a judge not for the prestige of the post or the pay (especially since lawyers typically earned more than judges at the time), but because he would be able to spend more time with his family, since judges had more predictable hours than lawyers did. "My dad did not talk about cases at home," Jay Johnson said. "When he was home, he was full-time dad," focusing on his family. Clarence Johnson would talk about what was going on at his children's schools, as well as church and sports — especially UF Gators football and the sports activities in which his children were involved. Flowers, Lerner Endorse Heeren for State House

Alex Heeren is running for Florida House District 66. SEMINOLE – Pinellas County School Board members Rene Flowers and Linda Lerner today (May 21) endorsed Alex Heeren in his race for the Florida House in District 66. "The Florida Legislature is in need of a representative who remembers why he was sent to Tallahassee. As an elected official representing public school education, I truly believe that Alex understands the need for impactful and empowered legislation – focused on launching our scholars beyond anything they could ever imagine,” Flowers said. “As a former teacher, Alex understands that tests are meant to measure, not to punish, and that our teachers are deserving of a salary commensurate to the futures that they mold and shape on a daily basis. I know, without a doubt that Alex will fight for Public School Education." Lerner said, "I support Alex because he will stand up for our teachers and our support staff,. For too long, the Legislature has expected educators to do more with less, and it's time for t...

Florida State faces similar offense to Louisville in Week 4

South Florida, right? Wrong. There’s a very good chance that the Bulls will provide another tough matchup for the Seminoles, given the similarities of their starting quarterback, running back and wide receiver trio to Louisville. [embedded content] Quarterback Quinton Flowers possesses comparable athletic ability to Jackson. I know, it may be borderline sacrilegious to compare anyone to Louisville’s sophomore sensation at this point, but it’s the truth. Like Jackson, Flowers is capable of being dangerous on the ground and through the air. The junior may not be as accurate a passer or have the rushing numbers of the Cardinals’ star, but he’ll get the job done. Flowers has thrown for 716 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception on 41 of 75 passing. He’s also rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns on 31 attempts. While those statistics aren’t going to make the junior a Heisman candidate, Flowers has done enough to lead USF to a 3-0 start. USF tailback Marlon Mack is also comparable to Louisville senior Brandon Radcliff. Both backs weight 210 pounds — albeit Radcliff is more compact at 5-foot-9, three inches shorter than Mack — and were clocked running 4.5 40-yard dashes. Mack rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns on nine attempts against Syracuse in Week 3. The junior could pose a challenge for FSU’s defense, which has allowed 177.67 rushing yards per game in 2016. Like Radcliff, Mack excels sharing the backfield with an elusive, mobile quarterback. This allows him the opportunity to be a major threat on option plays and misdirections. Defenses need to account for both players, which is something FSU could struggle with Saturday. USF wide receiver Rodney Adams also shares similarities to Louisville’s James Quick. Both players are 6-foot-1, have an average 40 of 4.5 and contribute as No. 1 receiving options in the... (Today's U (blog))
