Edison & Ford Winter Estates, Fort Myers. Thomas Edison was Fort Myers' ultimate victory gardener. While he planted for practical reasons - materials to use in his inventions - his wife, Mina, was all about esthetics, and you can witness that at her eponymous Moonlight Garden. Plantings throughout the property's 26 acres reflect the tastes and work of the Edisons and the family of Henry Ford next door. During the garden festival, more than 40 garden vendors from around Florida will be selling exotic a...

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – A video posted on social media by a mother in Punta Gorda has gone viral, garnering more than 8 million views in just two days.
Meredith Masony, the star of the video, is a mother of three children and a devoted wife, but she also blogs for a website, ThatsInappropriate.com.
“We created a community for moms that is about real life. It’s about things that happen during the day that you might not want to post on Facebook but it was a struggle,” she explained in a Skype interview.
While Mother’s Day is devoted to women like her, she says it’s not all about the pampering and flowers, but rather it’s the one day of the year that mom’s should have off.
“It’s about being a real mom and not about magical rainbows and unicorns. It’s about raising kids and it’s a really tough job.”
Masony says she is overwhelmed by the response it’s getting online, and never thought it would actually go viral.
“What if this is just me? Then I thought, no there’s no way, I’m posting it,” Mason... (Wink News)
Apr 22, 2016Belize to observe Vaccination Week in the Americas
Belize district, visits to Early Childhood Learning Centers for vaccination and short talks on immunization in Punta Gorda, and health fairs in both Orange Walk and Corozal to promote immunization and other health services.
Dr. Natalia Beer, Maternal and Child Health Technical Advisor with the Ministry of Health, explained that while Belize participates in celebrating the week, the activities during this time are purely promotional because of the way the ministry approaches vaccination.
“We give priority to the routine vaccination program, providing vaccination to the children and other target populations, as much as possible, on a daily basis,” Beer said.
She explained that the ministry administers around 100,000 vaccines per year, carried out by around 60 rural and public health nurses.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports there are 25 diseases for which vaccines exist for their prevention and control. Those include: Diphtheria, Polio, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella.
Vaccination Week in the Americas began in 2002 in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador. In 2005 European nations began following the example set in the Americas and by 2012, the the WHO declared that all its members would observe the event.
Vaccination is a medical technique used to guard people from serious diseases by conditioning their immune system to fight those diseases. Physicians inject a small, non-harmful amount of the germ which causes the illness into a patient, primarily in the early years of life, so that the body develops antibodies t...
