Gardening: Classic Gomphrena remains popular after hundreds of years - The Detroit News

Thomas Jefferson planted seeds of this perky, heat-loving annual in his childhood garden in 1737 and he also grew it at Monticello. Today it’s still a staple in his estate's gardens as it’s one of the few annuals that can take the blistering heat of summer and continue to bloom all season. Gomphrena was originally available in pink, white and a vivid magenta, considered quite jarring by many in the old days. But some 30 years ago, a gorgeous new hybrid became available and got lots of attention. Those crimson red flowers of Gomphrena haagiana ‘Strawberry Fields’ were stunning additions to our orange and yellow stand of Bidens, Zinnia ‘Zahara’ and marigolds last summer in the OPC display garden in Rochester. A new selection, ‘Las Vegas Purple’, a vivid plum purple sporting small round flowers on a plant that has an upright growth habit, rising to 18 inches in height, is on my wish list. Though the flowers are relatively small and ball shaped, they attract attention because of their neon color. These and other Gomphrena are popular for use as cut flowers and are easily dried for use in wreaths and other everlasting arrangements that will last for years. New this season is a vegetative selection of Gomphrena, ‘Truffula Pink,’ from Proven Winners. It's a compact grower that produces bright pink flowers similar to the tall, bright pink see-through plant Gomphrena ‘Fireworks’ that also starred in the OPC display garden last season. Rising to 18 to 24 inches, it works well in garden plantings and containers and garnered rave reviews in trial gardens last year. Gomphrena thrive in full sun and hot weather and grow best in moist but well-drained soil. They don’t tolerate wet soil and are best watered at ground level.

The Great Outdoors: Flowers, smartphone hikes, hidden wildlife

A great place to get outside and see some early bloomers is Allerton Park near Monticello. Nancy Snellen, a Master Naturalist and park volunteer, said an easy walk in the woods to soak up some natural color is right around the mansion, especially between there and the meadow. You'll find winter aconite, a yellow flower, and snow drops, which are white, already blooming along with electric blue-colored squill, just beginning to pop, and crocus and daffodils, too. Snellen said this is definitely early for daffodils to bloom.Smartphone trekkingIf venturing to a state park for a hike this spring, consider downloading the Prairie State Hike app to your smartphone, which includes guided hikes at various parks like Giant City, Illinois Beach, Pere Marquette, Starved Rock and Weldon Springs. Features include maps, points of interest, audio for stops along the way as well as photographs and video. Hikes are continually updated and new hikes added to the app that was developed by the nonprofit Prairie State Conservation Coalition. Hikes from other conservation organizations statewide are available through the app, too, but to find state park trails, open the app and choose Illinois Department of Natural Resources from the list of conservation organizations.Hidden wildlifeSummer seems a long way off, but the Champaign County Forest Preserve District's regist... Flower shop and owner a mainstay in Campustown

Christmastime, one who always sends a red and white arrangement to funerals and one from Monticello, who always requested that his arrangements be made by Johnston's mother, who worked with her daughter in the Champaign store during World War II. Later, Johnston took over. "He was a good customer until he died," Johnston said. Johnston met her husband of 30 years when he stopped by the shop one day. He wasn't looking for flowers. Seely Johnston — the longtime owner of Johnston's Sports in Champaign — was running for the Champaign city council, and he wanted her vote. "He talked for half an hour," recalled Johnston, who listened patiently. "When he finished talking, I said, 'Well, that's nice, but I can't vote for you. I live in Urbana.'" Sometime later, the Campustown merchants had a disagreement with the city. The city wanted to take down the street lights on Green Street, much to the merchants' objection. "I called him and said, 'What are we going to do?'" Johnston said of the recently-elected council member. "Seely was always for the underdog. He said, 'Come to the meeting and don't open your mouth until I ask you a question.' This went on for two years, so I saw him every two weeks. He got sick one time, so I sent him some crackers and cheese. Then he called me. That's how it started." The two dated for five years and married on July 18, 1971. It was a happy union. "I had my business, and he had his, so there was no arguing," Johnston said with a smile. The couple never had any children together, but Seely Johnston, a widower, had two children from his first marriage. Anne Johnston remains close to her step-daughter, Jan Glick, who lives in Kansas. The couple enjoyed traveling together throughout the U.S. and Europe and vacationing at their condo in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. And they were both civic-minded. Johnston was involved with the Campus Businessmen's Association, serving as president for two years and putting out the newsletter for 25. In addition to serving on the council, her husband supported Champaign Central High School, his alma mater; Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul; and other organizations. He helped charter the Exchange Club of Champaign and was active until his death in 2001. Both die-hard Illini fans, they were also involved in the Illini Rebounders and Quarterback Club and attended games when they could. Johnston still belongs to those organizations, but admits she hasn't been able to attend meetings or games for a few years. While that may be true, club officials said she has continued to provide them with beautiful flower arrangements, corsages and plants for raffles for meetings and luncheons. div class="hiding" id="bodytext-page-4"...
