Egg hunt drew throng to Lake Wales attraction

Central Floridians and visitors once ventured to Easter celebrations at the Lake Wales attraction titled "The Great Masterpiece" — mentioned in Flashback a few weeks ago with a 1950s postcard that touted it as one of Central Florida's "Big Three," along with Cypress Gardens and Lake Wales. That mention inspired email memories from Richard "Dick" McHenry about a year in which he did public-relations work for the attraction. "I promoted the World's Largest Easter Egg Hunt, for which I got the Florida Egg Commission to donate 7,000 eggs," McHenry recalls. "The event drew a huge crowd." Unfortunately, fewer than 1,000 eggs were found, and the rest left a distinctive aroma for a week. It's a problem that plagues Floridians as we import holiday celebrations from cooler climes.
