Former Giants tackle Ereck Flowers signs with Jaguars

Either Tom Coughlin sees something in Ereck Flowers or he has become exceptional in trolling the Giants. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed the former Giants left tackle to a one-year deal on Friday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, just three days after he was released by Big Blue. Coughlin, executive vice president of football operations for the Jaguars, was the Giants head coach when the team drafted Flowers with the ninth overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft. Flowers, however, never panned out and is considered a bust as he failed to show any progress and was replaced at left tackle by free agent Nate Solder and moved to right tackle before the start of the season. The position switch did not make much of a difference and the Giants released him after just five games. Flowers fills a need for depth at left tackle for the Jaguars after Cam Robinson tore his ACL in Week 2, ending his season. Robinson was replaced by Josh Wells, but he sustained a groin injury in the Jaguars' recent Week 5 loss to the Chiefs and was placed on the injured reserve on Friday. Head coach...

Sunday Shift: What's It Gonna Take for the Patriots to Keep Trey Flowers and Shaq Mason?

To Pay Mason... Jan 21, 2018, Foxborough, MA: New England Patriots guard Shaq Mason against the Jacksonville Jaguars during the AFC Championship at Gillette Stadium. (Photo Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports) Mason's situation is far less complicated, but not much less expensive. Does Belichick hold Mason, who's ascended to become one of the better guards in the NFL in recent years, in the same high regard as he did Logan Mankins? Regardless of how Belichick values Mason as an asset, the reality is he could end up the best player available at his positi...

Highway wildflowers to appear soon

It’s kind of a mix, right now it should be some poppies for the spring,” Vause said. These poppies can be spotted on the U.S. 17 bypass near the Jacksonville DMV, along with purple rocket larkspur flowers. Also in Onslow County, flower beds are being weeded on N.C. 24 near Hubert and the N.C. 172 intersection.DuplinAccording to Vause, Duplin County wildflowers will be sown later this spring to bloom in the summer, so no prep work has been done just yet.“It just happened that in Duplin County we had planted flowers last summer and by the time we came to plant the blooms in the fall, they were still blooming,” Vause said. “So we chose to just go ahead and let them finish blooming.”CarteretCome spring, poppies will be visible in at least two of the four flower beds in Carteret County. Greg Rayburn, transportation supervisor advanced for Carteret, Lenoir, Craven, Jones, Pamlico and Pitt counties said one bed will be near the stoplight going toward Emerald Isle from Cedar Point. Another point will be a long flower bed that runs next to the bridge in Cape Carteret. Near the Hardee’s and Ribeyes, he added, Gloriosa daisies may be coming up from last fall.LenoirOn U.S. 70 near the Wayne County line, Rayburn said poppies were planted along with purple larkspur flowers. And between roads near the Chevrolet dealership coming out of Lagrange, folks may see poppies and biden flowers later in the summer, a flower native to North Carolina. Also on U.S. 70 near exit 148, a bed of poppies and larkspur will be coming up.The mix of California poppies, red poppies and larkspur is used so often because the flowers stand up to herbicide treatments.“We’re restricted to one or two flower (species) in a bed because you know you’ll be dealing with certain weeds and will have to use certain herbicides.”CravenA long, narrow bed on U.S. 70 toward the Jones overpass and N.C. 41 will show off some purple larkspur flowers this spring. Last summer, sunflowers were planted in the location.Jones and PamlicoFor this year, Rayburn said there just wasn’t an appropriate place to plant wildflowers in Jones or Pamlico counties because the flower beds are usually about an acre.In fact, sometimes traditional sites for flowers have to refrain from planting to let the soil recover.“If you go by a bed and it hasn’t been planted, it might have been left out for rotation purposes,” Rayburn said. With 25 years of experience working with the DOT, Rayburn said he has seen changes come through the wildflower program. One of the specific challenges has been dealing with the Round-Up resistant pig weed, he said.“I’ve seen a lot of changes in the way we do the things we do but we still get the same end product,” Rayburn said.Vause, too, has been working roadside maintenance with the D... Flowers chosen for European event

Morgan Overly (St. Simons Island, Ga. – Anderson University).Although they are considering many offers, Flowers and libero Izzy Schwam from Jacksonville, Fla., are the only players yet to make their collegiate choices. Coaches for the team are Kamryn Sherman (Clemson ’13) and CJ Sherman (Covenant ’87). “Maryville College coach Kandis Schram actually nominated Emma for it last year and they contacted us about her playing again this year,” related Cleveland head coach Trish Flowers, who is also Emma’s mother.“This is actually the first time since 14-under ball that she’s getting to play with her own age group,” the elder Flowers explained. “She’s always played ‘up,’ against older girls.”“Playing ‘up’ has been bittersweet, but it has helped her in some things she needed to work on.”Despite being a 6-foot-2, power hitter, Flowers has the athleticism to play every position on the court, so at the high school and club level she rarely leaves a match.“There has been a lot of pressure, especially from college coaches, that want her to just concentrate on one position, as well as just play one sport,”?commented the two-sport standout’s coach and mom.Along with being the Co-District 5-AAA?Player of the Year, as well as district and region tournament MVPs,? Flowers is also an all-district performer on the basketball court.“I played multiple sports in high school and I?think it benefits players to do that, so they don’t risk getting burned out,” stated Coach Flowers, who was a?three-sport (track, volleyball, basketball) standout in high school herself in Fairfield, Ohio, before coming to play basketball for Lee College and was a member of the Lady Flames' 1999 NCCAA?National Championship squad.“Playing basketball has been good for her. Coach (Tony)?Williams has pushed her to a higher level and increased her competitive spirit.”On the volleyball court last fall, the Flowers duo led the Lady Raiders to the program’s first TSSAA?State Tournament berth.Cleveland finished 39-15 on the campaign and tied for sixth place at the state event. After bouncing back from an opening round loss to nine-time state champion Siegel, they posted a big victory over three-time state champ Ravenwood. The Lady Raider season ended against Farragut, which was on its way to its second straight state runner-up finish. Emma earned a spot on the Class AAA Tennessee Sports Writers Association's All-State Team after leading the greater Chattanooga area in kills (779) and was second in aces (94).She also finished with a career-best 388 digs, 256 assists and 19 blocks.Flowers also played for the C4 Explosion volleyball team, which had a great club season.“We (C4) qualified for the nationals for the first time, but we weren’t able to go, because some of our best girls had prom that weekend,” Emma related.“We placed very high in tournaments in Nashville, Atlanta, (Louisville) Kentucky and St. Louis,” she added.Nancy Culver coaches the C4 squad that includes several players from Baylor, Signal Mountain and the North Georgia area. While Flowers has several offers from NAIA?and NCAA?D-II schools, she is waiting to make her collegiate decision.“I’m trying to keep my options open,” she explained. “I’m looking for the door God is going to open for me. I don’t want to rush into ... (Cleveland Daily Banner)
