David E. Attaway, age 77 of Jacksonville, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, January 26th, 2021, following a long illness. He was born on April 16, 1943 in Mexia to the late Carroll Attaway and Dorcas Cody Attaway. Following graduation, David proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He retired from Goodyear after 35 years of service. David was outgoing and never met a stranger. He loved fishing and being the consummate jokester. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Andrea Hollis; grandson John; brother Kenneth Attaway and sister, Ella Jean Rogers. He is survived by his loving wife, Lynda Dykes Attaway of Jacksonville; sons, David Wayne Attaway of Pueblo, CO, Donny Attaway of Grain Valley, MO, Johnny Attaway and his wife, Angie of Lee's Summit, MO, Darrell Attaway and his wife Shannon of Mabank and Kenneth Attaway of Winnsboro; step-son Dr. Frank Dykes and his spouse, Griff Hubbard of Longview; step-mother, Waunice Attaway of Madisonville ; brother Carroll E. Attaway of Tyler; nephews; nieces; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; cousins; aunts; uncles ;and bonus daughters and faithful caregivers Penny Roberts of Henderson, Ruthie Davis of Jacksonville, Amy Newcome of Henderson, Debra Gipson of Chapel Hill and Laura Parker of Gallatin; and a host of friends. Former Giants tackle Ereck Flowers signs with Jaguars

Either Tom Coughlin sees something in Ereck Flowers or he has become exceptional in trolling the Giants. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed the former Giants left tackle to a one-year deal on Friday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, just three days after he was released by Big Blue. Coughlin, executive vice president of football operations for the Jaguars, was the Giants head coach when the team drafted Flowers with the ninth overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft. Flowers, however, never panned out and is considered a bust as he failed to show any progress and was replaced at left tackle by free agent Nate Solder and moved to right tackle before the start of the season. The position switch did not make much of a difference and the Giants released him after just five games. Flowers fills a need for depth at left tackle for the Jaguars after Cam Robinson tore his ACL in Week 2, ending his season. It’s kind of a mix, right now it should be some poppies for the spring,” Vause said.These poppies can be spotted on the U.S. 17 bypass near the Jacksonville DMV, along with purple rocket larkspur flowers.Also in Onslow County, flower beds are being weeded on N.C. 24 near Hubert and the N.C. 172 intersection.DuplinAccording to Vause, Duplin County wildflowers will be sown later this spring to bloom in the summer, so no prep work has been done just yet.“It just happened that in Duplin County we had planted flowers last summer and by the time we came to plant the blooms in the fall, they were still blooming,” Vause said. “So we chose to just go ahead and let them finish blooming.”CarteretCome spring, poppies will be visible in at least two of the four flower beds in Carteret County. Greg Rayburn, transportation supervisor advanced for Carteret, Lenoir, Craven, Jones, Pamlico and Pitt counties said one bed will be near the stoplight going toward Emerald Isle from Cedar Point. Another point will be a long flower bed that runs next to the bridge in Cape Carteret. Coaches for the team are Kamryn Sherman (Clemson ’13) and CJ Sherman (Covenant ’87). “Maryville College coach Kandis Schram actually nominated Emma for it last year and they contacted us about her playing again this year,” related Cleveland head coach Trish Flowers, who is also Emma’s mother.“This is actually the first time since 14-under ball that she’s getting to play with her own age group,” the elder Flowers explained. “She’s always played ‘up,’ against older girls.”“Playing ‘up’ has been bittersweet, but it has helped her in some things she needed to work on.”Despite being a 6-foot-2, power hitter, Flowers has the athleticism to play every position on the court, so at the high school and club level she rarely leaves a match.“There has been a lot of pressure, especially from college coaches, that want her to just concentrate on one position, as well as just play one sport,”?commented the two-sport standout’s coach and mom.Along with being the Co-District 5-AAA?Player of the Year, as well as district and region tournament MVPs,?
