Jul 5, 2016Turtle crashes through windshield in Deltona, lives to swim another day
Those shells really work.

A car hit a turtle on Interstate 4 in Deltona this week, catapulting the critter through another driver's windshield, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Nicole Marie Bjanes, 38, was driving west on I-4 in Deltona about noon Monday when a car ahead of her struck a red-eared slider crawling across the highway. The impact sent the turtle airborne. And it crashed right through the windshield of Bjanes' Volkswagen Jetta.

A man in a pickup stopped and called 9-1-1 to report the airborne turtle.

"The turtle flew through her windshield," the dispatcher repeats sounding somewhat incredulous.

"The turtle flew through her windshield. She's got a cut on her forehead. Turtle's still inside," the caller said.

A few moments later the dispatcher asked: "How big was the turtle?"

"Man, it's a big ass turtle," the man said.

He said the woman might have a concussion but was conscious and the turtle may have hi... Apr 22, 2016Chitwood attempts to make up ground in sheriff's race
Johnson — who was already in his 12th year as Volusia sheriff — was challenged by Wendell Bradford, a Seminole County sheriff's deputy who lives in Deltona and is again a candidate this year.

Johnson defeated Bradford by a 3-to-1 margin, after raising nearly $158,000 on more than 800 contributions.

Three of the most frequent sources of campaign support in Volusia — ISC, Brown & Brown and ICI through donations of up to $500 by individuals and related companies — accounted for nearly $7,000 of that, while many other wealthy donors contributed the max. That helped the campaign buy flowers, food for events and event tickets. Also, palm cards, direct mail, T-shirts and hats, newspaper and Internet ads.

By contrast, Bradford accepted nearly $24,000 in contributions, including a $5,200 loan from himself.

He was comparatively unknown, as Johnson had previously been elected three times. But the sheriff said his campaign money came in handy by allowing him to deliver a variety of messages — name recognition, his own goals and "to counter something somebody said about you."

Now retired from Seminole County, Bradford said he has more time to campaign, and he's set his sights higher. He finished March with $15,345, including $10,000 of his own money, and said he has two events planned this month and more in May to spread his message of change.

"You do need money to run a campaign, but you want the vote more than the money," Bradford said. "From what I'm looking at, I need about $100,000."

DIETRICH'S ADVANTAGES

After Johnson made his endorsement, the sheriff hasn't simply shuffled off, awaiting retirement. He has remained active in support of Dietrich, a Volusia deputy since 1994.

"I'm helping him any way I can," Johnson said. "I'm going to events with him, talking to people I know. I sent out letters to my supporters."

That's made a difference. Through March, 85 of Dietrich's donors had also showed up on Johnson's 2012 ledger. One, retired fern farmer Charles Sheldon Murphy of Edgewater, donated $100 to Johnson in 2012 and another $100 to Dietrich in February.

"I do not know (Dietrich). I do know Ben Johnson. He's a personal friend of mine," Murphy said. "If Ben recommends him, that's good enough for me."

But Dietrich isn't relying on the sheriff alone. Where Johnson grew up in the DeLand area and has countless friends in West Volusia, Dietrich received more than 180 contributions from people and businesses that did not show up on Johnson's 2012 list. Born in Daytona Beach and raised on the county's east side, Dietrich has turned to innumerable friends from Spruce Creek High School and family members — including his brother Dan, a South Daytona police lieutenant who gave $1,000.

Dietrich also said he received word Friday that he had become the first sheriff candidate to quali... Feb 2, 2016Deltona's Pine Ridge High lab manufactures skills, hope
DELTONA — After a Pine Ridge High School teacher's retirement a few years ago, the woodshop room was vacant.

"Except for dust and cobwebs," said state Rep. David Santiago.

He and the principal, John Atkinson, the local manufacturing association and others started asking questions. How can we make this room useful? Might there be a more direct link between school resources and available jobs? Is there a way to deliver students a high-demand, high-tech, career pathway?

Atkinson, named Pine Ridge principal in 2011, consulted with Volusia County school district administrators, employers — particularly the manufacturing sector that has long sought skilled workers — as well as Santiago, a Deltona Republican. Their questions, and more than a $1 million investment by the district and state, led to this year's startup of a first-of-its-kind manufacturing program that's rooted in STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics.</p&...
