Historic Daytona Beach flower shop suffers extensive damage after electrical fire - WKMG News 6 & ClickOrlando

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – If you live in Daytona Beach, the retro green and pink sign outside Zahn’s Flowers will be a familiar sight. Owner Leah Mihalko said it’s been a part of the community for nearly 100 years, originally owned by the Zahn family.“My grandparents bought the store from the Zahn family in the 70s... Sweet smell of success for Daytona's Zahn's Flowers

Jim Abbott @JimAbbottwrites DAYTONA BEACH — After 40 years around flowers, Emily Voegtle will tell you that she never intended to go into the florist business, although she has been a fixture amid the buds, ribbons and vases at Zahn’s Flowers since she was 10 years old.“I went to school to be a nurse,” said Voegtle, 50, the second-generation owner of a shop that opened in 1927 and operated for its first 53 years by its namesake family, Peter and Reuben Zahn.Peter Zahn had joined the family business after serving in World War II, taking sole ownership after his father’s death in 1960. ''Back then, and into the early '50s, this was a seasonal business,'' he told The News-Journal in a 1976 interview marking the shop’s 49th anniversary.In 1978, Zahn was honored with a 50-year certificate of membership from the Florists Transworld Delivery Association, one of only three Florida florists at the time to receive that honor. Big winner in Halifax Country Flower Show plants gardening passions in others

Growing up in Scotland, Myrna Moore began gardening at age 6.“Culturally there, everyone has gardens and flowers,” said Moore, who now lives in Daytona Beach Shores.But gardening took on a new meaning for her in 2002. While Moore was a registered nurse, she acquired a latex allergy that made her become very ill. She was housebound for two years and had to leave her job.“So, all I could do was play with my plants,” Moore said. “It just got more and more involved. And then they found a drug that let me actually come back out in public again, so I take shots and get to come out in public.”At age 67, Moore walked away from the Halifax Country Flower Show with three horticulture awards and at least 20 ribbons, showing her success as a master gardener.Moore said she showcased about 55 plants at this show. An outdoor garden of 500-600 plants with a brick courtyard protecting them fills the yard outside her home.“It’s like a hoarding disease,” she said. “My son just calls it my plant mess. Frederick “Drew” Dellecker weighed heavy on the hearts of family, service members, politicians and strangers who gathered to pay their respects during services at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.The two were among three airmen who died on the evening of March 14, after their reconnaissance plane crashed during a training exercise near Clovis, New Mexico. Becker and Dellecker served with the 318th Special Operations Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico, and had ties to Volusia County.Surfer-turned-pilotFlanked by flowers and a brass ensemble, an American flag covered 26-year-old Dellecker’s casket Friday afternoon. Group helps couple have dream wedding on beach

Austin Fuller @austinfullernj DAYTONA BEACH SHORES — Heather Raleigh and Paige Metelka had struggled to plan a wedding because the costs appeared to be overwhelming. “It never felt like it would be real for me to marry the woman that I love," Raleigh said. On Sunday, family and friends gathered around an aisle of white sand decorated with shells and flowers to watch the couple commit to each other as the Atlantic Ocean crashed in the background. The wedding was put together by the Florida Organization of Wedding & Event Representatives, or FLOWER. The Daytona Beach-based group consists of wedding and event professionals aiming to help the community. The ceremony took place on the shore behind the Residence Inn Daytona Beach Oceanfront Marriott under blue skies with streaks of white clouds. The wedding then moved to the hotel, which is a member of the FLOWER organization. “This is absolutely amazing.
