Nov 9, 2019Fairchild's Million Orchid Project Brings Native Plants to Miami Beach's Lincoln Road - Miami New Times
Tropical Botanic Garden’s Million Orchid Project, a five-year program that aims to reintroduce orchids in public spaces. Orchids now enliven Coral Gables and Coconut Grove; this leg of the project was funded by Stephen Bittel, chairman and founder of the local real-estate firm Terranova Corporation, as a gift to the City of Miami Beach. Many varieties of orchid are native to South Florida. More than a century ago, the fragrant flowers would have been a common sight in trees throughout the area. But a lethal combination of exploitation — through agriculture, the houseplant industry, and urban development — has reduced the population of native orchids to the point they cannot recover without human assistance.Enter the Million Orchid Project.Pedestrians can enjoy 500 brightly colored orchids while strolling along South Beach's popular promenade. “Each orchid has its own personality and thrives at a particular time. As you walk through different seasons, different orchids will be in flower," says Tim Schmand, executive director of the Lincoln Road Business Improvement District. “Bring your camera — there are some breathtaking moments.” Even in this bustling shopping and dining destination, Schmand says, he has already seen people stopping to admire and photograph the orchids. In addition to providing beauty, the project is an important conservat...

Jul 26, 2019Tropical Flowering Tree Society keeps City Beautiful blooming - Miami's Community Newspapers
Participants get ready for tour to see some beauty in bloom.
The Tropical Flowering Tree Society (TFTS) is an organization in Coral Gables of approximately 100 volunteers who work hard to plant and propagate special flowering trees.
All trees blossom and let fall some nut or flower, however, these are particularly “showy” as Stephen Pearson, one of the society’s board members, said.
“We are fortunate to have trees with showy flowers in bloom 12 months a year,” he said.
The trees that he is talking about are poincianas, golden shower, queen’s crepe myrtle, jacaranda, copper pod, frangipani, ampng others. When the Society first formed there were only a handful of species, now there are hundreds throughout the City Beautiful.
These trees are easy to spot because of their dramatic colors. They are orange, red and even yellow on top. The trees can grow upward of 40 feet with overhead canopies of up to 60 feet in diameter.
The group of aficionados met on Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9, to take a trolley tour and view the colorful treetops. On Saturday, they filled two buses, and they filled one on Sunday. The ev...

Nov 28, 2018Florida On A Tankful: Fairchild Botanical Gardens - News 13 Orlando
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Flowers around every corner, and no shortage of wildlife makes up the lush gardens at Fairchild Botanical Gardens in South Florida."People will tell us walking into the gardens is almost like walking into paradise or heaven," Public Relations Coordinator Maureen Tan said.
Eighty-three acres make up the expansive botanical gardens, but it's the range in what you'll see that really makes this spot so unique.
Due to the climate in South Florida, you'll see some truly breathtaking plants that can only grow in this part of Florida.
In fact, their tropical rainforest is where you'll feel like you've actually been transported to another country, with exotic orchids and cascading waterfalls.
"This is the only place in the continental U.S. that has a tropical rainforest - really the only other place that can do this is Hawaii," Tan said.
And as you make your way through both the tropical rainiest and butterfly conservatory, you'll find yourself in their rare plants greenhou...
