'Petal it Forward': Free flower bouquets bring smiles to Bonita Springs residents - Naples Daily News

Janet Lonicka moved to Bonita Springs about two weeks ago. She’s making friends, exploring the city and finding what the community can offer. On Wednesday, she stumbled across Heaven Scent Flowers in the city’s downtown. The florist was giving two bouquets of flowers to anyone who walked through the door. Lonicka wanted to brighten the day of a new friend, and flowers always bring a smile, she said. “I have a sweet 87-year-old neighbor who can’t easily leave the house,” she said. “(These flowers) will brighten her day so much.” “Petal it Forward” is a national event where flower shops hand out hundreds of bouquets to patrons and local businesses. Florists give two bouquets to every customer with one caveat — they must give one arrangement to someone they think deserves it, said Susie Sayger, owner of Heaven Scent. Frederick Costello Obituary - Lee, MA | The Berkshire Eagle - Legacy.com

Frederick James "Pop" Costello, 82, of Bonita Springs, FL died on July 31, 2019 after a long illness. While Fred enjoyed a successful career, his most treasured work was building a family with Nancy Peters, his high school sweetheart and wife of 60 years, whom he frequently called "the center of my universe." Fred was born on June 11, 1937 in Pittsfield MA, to James V Costello, an immigrant from Spain and Elsie Broga whose American roots trace to 1630 settlers of Connecticut. The couple raised Fred and his two siblings on the family farm on Greenwater Pond in nearby Becket-- a modest homestead on land granted to Andrew Broga, Elsie's great grandfather, for his service in the Revolutionary War. Fred and his brother John lovingly maintained the property over the years and because of their generosity, ensuing generations have enjoyed fishing, late-night bonfires and flashlight tag on its grounds. Fred graduated from Lee High School and earned a BS from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he majored in chemical engineering a...

Home & Garden: The Birds and the Bees

Florida, which is in the middle of a prolonged moderate-to-severe drought. We visited friends this weekend who were vacationing in nearby Bonita Springs, in a rental they described as “funky but nicely modernized.” It was at the end of a street of stucco houses of varying vintages, most of which were baking in record heat, but their rental was set next to a small creek that was overhung with huge old trees — palms and strangler figs — that were themselves hosts to vines and climbing plants. Its banks were lined with beds of eye-popping tropical plants and foliage, while the sound of water splashing through a man-made waterfall was enhanced by the activities and calls of many different birds. Because this was Florida, the house came complete with a lanai that included a hot tub and a 72-inch television screen, not one, but two tiki bars, and lights and surround-sound everywhere, but it was the natural shade and light, water and bird songs that made it all an urban oasis. It brought home the point made in “The Bee-Friendly Garden”: what’s good for the bees and birds is good for us humans as well. (Freepress Online)
