Garden Club To Host 'We Need Our Pollinators'

University of Connecticut (2011), and a past president of The Garden Club of Newtown. Ms Kocet is employed by Earth Tones Native Plant Nursery in Woodbury, where her love of native plants was nurtured, and where she has learned a great deal about native plant species that support bees, butterflies, and other wildlife.Ms Gaudet-Wilson is a founder of Protect Our Pollinators. She is also an educator and former Newtown Conservation Commission chairman.Their power point presentation is titled “We Need Our Pollinators — who are they, what they need, and how can we help them.” The program includes interesting facts about who is responsible for pollinating the flowers, plants, trees, and many of foods for human consumption. It describes their needs, their habits, and how to attract them to your garden. The program points out how valuable pollinators are and causes for the decline of many pollinator species. Finally, some suggestions are given on how we can help them and be enriched ourselves in the process.Protect Our Pollinators (POP) is a small group of dedicated individuals based in Newtown who advocate for pollinators and their habitats. Flower power: Woodbury women fly to Pasadena to help decorate Rose Bowl Parade float

Small wonder that Tara Carlson, Lindsey Busch and Holly Macke are so excited. The Woodbury trio flew to California to help to build a floral parade float for the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. The float, titled “Never Give Up,” features a tortoise racing a hare. It’s one of 40 that will appear in the annual Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade Jan. 2. The three work together at Sweet Peas Floral in Woodbury. Carlson owns the store. Busch, a certified floral designer, is an employee there; Macke is a contract worker. This year’s float is at least 85 percent fresh flowers, according to the South Pasadena website. Volunteers construct the bones of the float from June through November. Decorating begins in October and culminates with Deco Week Dec. 26-31. The three will join volunteers from the local community and others from around the country who applied online for the chance to build a float. Downtown Vineland: Making Connections

Word of this tour attracted a lot of attention and among our guests for the tour was the Economic Development Director of Woodbury, who has heard the buzz about the great things happening here. Unlike last June’s tour, the weather this time was much more cooperative but, like last year’s tour, the properties created a lot of interest and we won praise for how well organized the tour was. For that, I want to thank my assistant Robin Barbetti and Main Street Vineland Business Development Director Robert Scarpa, who did a fantastic job in putting the whole thing together. I want to give a big shout-out to Foundation Title, LLC, and Frank Conroy of Farmers Insurance who sponsored the event. We’re moving forward with filling our downtown properties with sustainable businesses for people to patronize. The next night, area businesses representatives had the opportunity to connect with each other and with us at Main Street at our most recent Downtown Merchants Meet-and-Greet. Century Savings Bank hosted it this time and really rolled out the red carpet with fantastic hors d’oeuvres and hospitality. The bank lobby was full, with animated conversation coming from all quarters. It was a great opportunity to network, for business representatives to spread the word about their businesses and for us to spread the word about all that we’re doing. Thanks go to all who helped to put this together. Over the next two Saturdays, we’ll have an opportunity to maintain our connection with some of our area youth groups as they help us with our Spring Clean-Up and Planting Days. The clean-up will be this Saturday, April 16 and the planting will take place the following Saturday, April 23. Both will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., rain or shine, and volunteers will meet at the mini-parks, Landis Avenue and the Boulevard. Fro...
