Obituary: Robert Francis Jordan, long-time former resident, marketing executive, UCONN Huskies fan

Robert was a long time resident of Darien, having raised his two sons there.  Robert is survived by his son Christopher Jordan of West Palm Beach, FL; son Garrett Jordan and his wife Beth of Hingham, MA; brother Steve Jordan and nephew Ryan Jordan of Wethersfield, CT and three grandchildren, Alexis, Piper and Liam.  Robert will be laid to rest with a private service at the Connecticut State Veteran’s Cemetery in Middletown, Connecticut.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made to the Make-A- Wish Foundation at www.wish.org. A beautiful tradition: Flowering baskets return to downtown lamp posts

The committee has been arranging for and placing the baskets of cascading flowers for over a decade.On May 24, committee members met at 7:30 a.m. at the Goodwives Shopping Center to accept delivery of 184 flowering baskets which were hung throughout downtown Darien and along the Post Road from the area near Starbucks to Noroton. The Department of Public Works crew joins the committee each year to help hang them. The committee has used the same Long Island nursery for many years, have experimented over the years with the flower and color choice. Suzanne Schutte, commission chairman said “We believe we have come up with the perfect, long living, and beautiful arrangement. Each basket is comprised of a selection of pink, purple, blue and white petunias (traditional New England colors), and is housed in a moss lined basket to retain water.” Each basket weighs approximately 10 pounds (dry/not watered), so it’s both a challenge and great workout to get them all hung, she said.The commission always has them delivered and hung right bef... Simbang Gabi heralds Christmas in Philippine tradition

Masses will be said nightly at two West suburban churches. The Masses are set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Darien and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Immaculate Church in Plainfield. Several Catholic churches grouped in two clusters within the Joliet Diocese will take turns hosting each evening's Mass. The novena takes its name -- Simbang Gabi -- from the Philippine native language, Tagalog. "It means 'Night Mass,'" said Ditas Alzona, organizer of the special service at Christ the King Catholic Church in Lombard, which will host Simbang Gabi for the eastern cluster on Thursday, Dec. 15. Many people go to Mass on each of the nine nights to complete the novena, she said. "It's in preparation for Christmas Day, in preparation for the coming of the Lord," she said. Alzona said the Mass, which includes a children's procession, music and special readings, is similar to those observed in the islands. "The only difference is the time. Normally, in the Philippines, Simbang Gabi is celebrated at 4 o'clock in the morning because the people are fishermen or farmers," she said. "We have to adjust to the time." Masses in the diocese are scheduled for as early as 4:30 p.m. and as late as 7:30 p.m. Lourdes Chew is on the Simbang Gabi committee at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Naperville. St. Thomas is hosting Simbang Gabi Mass at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17. "Most Filipinos who have moved here and are Americans now have experienced this as a child.
