Dec 10, 2020Washington Liquors Closes + Florists' Telegraph Delivery Blooms: The Florist You May Have Missed - hobokengirl.com
Street. The photo was taken during Hoboken’s Centennial Parade.
Florists’ Telegraph Delivery was founded in 1910 by John A. Valentine in Rochester, NY. The Hoboken store at 211 Washington may have opened in the late 1940s since the name ‘Interflora’ was first used. Interflora described the merging between the US, British, and European Telegraph lines.
In 1933, Florists’ Telegraph Delivery entered their first float in the famous Rose Parade, an event held in Pasadena since 1890 by the Valley Hunt Club. Through the years, celebrities, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Rosemary Clooney, have been spokespersons for Florists’ Telegraph Delivery.
Advertisements of the 1940s and 1950s depicted families and loved ones receiving flowers, usually accompanied by the slogan: “Say It With Flowers By Wire.” Their ‘Mercury Man’ logo became synonymous with sending flowers. Sometimes he was even depicted holding a bow and arrow like Cupid. In the 1960s the company changed its name to Florists’ Transworld Delivery to emphasize their global reach and modernization.
Over 100 years later, Florists’ Telegraph Delivery continues to operate. There is a chance that you may have even purchased their flowers without knowing! Flowers Direct {UK}, Pro Flowers, Personal Creations, and others make up only a portion of their brand. Their headquarters is now in Downers Grove, Illinois, and was recently taken private after Nexus Capital Management acquired it.
CoolVines, a Princeton-based wine shop, is moving into the space. Currently, CoolVines has 2 locations in Jersey City and one in downtown Newark. This will be their first shop in the Mile Square. The transition has allowed for a small piece of Hoboken’s history to emerge briefly before being covered up once more. Who knows when Interflora will bloom again!

Aug 3, 2020Downingtown’s Petals Please recycles wedding and funeral flowers into free bouquets for lonely seniors - The Philadelphia Inquirer
Lots of people love flowers. But few love flowers as much as the people of Petals Please. This Chester County nonprofit rescues and repurposes beautiful blooms from weddings, funerals, corporate events, and other occasions. Related stories Volunteers pick up the donations, disassemble the sprays and centerpieces, trim the blossoms, and create teacup bouquets and other small arrangements for delivery to senior citizens like May Hiltebeitel. “Flowers are heartwarming and wonderful,” Hiltebeitel, 101, said from the Simpson Meadows Retirement Community in Downingtown — the town where the garden she once created outside her own home on a busy street became a local landmark. “Petals Please brings so much happiness to us old folks living alone,” Hiltebeitel said. “In fact, it’s the next best thing to your grandchildren coming to visit.” Petals Please, founded in 2018, has created and delivered about 8,000 floral gifts throughout Chester County. Most of the recipients are in nursing homes, hospice care, or are Meals on Wheels clients; some have few visito...
Jun 19, 2020New Hampshire florists see demand bloom despite event cancellations - New Hampshire Business Review
Pandemics don’t have silver linings, but they’re catalysts for compassion. Aimee Godbout of the family-owned Jacques Flowers in Manchester, said she expects sales to drop off during summer, but she’s seen an uptick in customers placing orders outside of special occasions.
“There’s the everyday ‘I miss you,’” as people choose flowers for parents they’re unable to visit, a neighbor who can’t get out of the house or the local nursing staff, she said.
“Right now there’s a lot of ugliness happening in the world,” said Godbout. Working at a flower shop provides contrast. “Every time you pick up the phone, it’s someone calling to be nice.”
Wrenn, of Shirley’s Flowers, has noticed that requests are grander and more intricate. Instead of ordering simple bouquets to honor birthdays, customers want floral cakes dotted with lavender blooms and candles. Or they request novelties: flower arrangements designed to resemble mermaids, unicorns or cats.
Meanwhile, proms and graduations are canceled. Godbout said her company normally sets up the stages to honor these milestones, but “all that business is gone.”
Offsetting a potential summer slump is Godbout’s garden shop. Springtime has pollinated a kinship for plants and with people spending more time at home, even those without a green thumb are taking up the horticulture hobby to cultivate a backyard escape.
In the last week or so, Godbout has arranged phone or video consultations from brides who rescheduled or are starting to plan their ceremonies for 2021.
