Leominster’s downtown seasonal explosion of floral color is a labor of love supported by the community - Sentinel & Enterprise

Recreation Department crew member Sallie Poirier said while watering the colorful flowers on the traffic island directly in front of Monument Square, which is sponsored by National Grid. Those sponsorships are an integral part of each spring and summer’s explosion of color throughout the city, said Mayor Dean Mazzarella, pointing out that the city’s Dandini Landscaping Co. also maintains several islands throughout the city as does the Leominster Rotary Club. Mazzarella said the enhanced landscaping of the downtown began several years ago and got a big push when Paul Cavicchio Jr. of Cavicchio Greenhouses Inc., which is located in Sudbury, made a financial donation to help with the landscaping. The city used that donation to begin the process of purchasing the plants needed to beautify downtown. To keep everything looking green and colorful, a Recreation Department crew member waters everything growing every day of the week, using up to 1,400 gallons of water each day. With Larry Emby manning the water truck, Sallie Poirier waters the flowers in downtown. Walker and Arthur Ashe Jr. in a show of solidarity with local Black Lives Matter protesters and to make a positive statement about two highly regarded hometown heroes and trailblazers. Hillary Carr, 29, owner of Vessel + Stem, and Maya Shaw, 27, the company’s floral designer, were moved when monuments honoring Mrs. Walker, an iconic businesswoman and civil rights advocate, and Mr. Ashe, a tennis legend and humanitarian, were left unscathed after demonstrators vandalized stores and properties along Broad Street and in Jackson Ward and marred Confederate statues with graffiti on Monument Avenue in recent days.
