It May Be Wintertime, But Grand Junction Is Growing 10,000 Plants - kool1079.com

Winter wouldn't seem to be the best time of the year for horticulture activity, but in Grand Junction, it's actually the perfect time. The City of Grand Junction is currently in the process of growing some 10,000 plants that will be used throughout the city in the upcoming planting season. The growing season actually started in September and the planting season will take place between April and June.If you are slightly confused, let me explain. The Horticulture Division of the Grand Junction Parks & Recreation Department is growing a majority of the plants it needs by renting out 600 square feet of space from Grow Fresh Aquaponic Farms. This process is apparently much cheaper than buying the plants from a commercial supplier. Last year the division grew about 1,800 plants using its own resources, which means they will save a ton of money on this year's budget. You'll see beautiful flowers in downtown Grand Junction as well as many other locations around Grand Junction. If you're like me, you've probably seen these flowers around town but never really gave much thought t...

City growing its own flowers for spring planting - The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

The Grand Junction Parks and Recreation Department Horticulture Division is increasing the number of flowers and other plant material it can plant around the city this spring while reducing the cost thanks to an innovative in-house growing system. The city will grow about 10,000 flowers and plants, which will go to city parks and along Main Street, mostly from seed, Parks and Recreation Director Ken Sherbenou said. Last year they planted about 5,000 plants in the city, but only grew about 1,800, which cost in total around $16,000. This year they will be able to plant twice as many for half the cost, Sherbenou said.“It is more staff intensive to grow our own, but we’ve really been expanding our systems and we’re able to get more economies of scale, especially this year with the partnership we have with Grow Fresh who is a sustainable agriculture firm that we’re renting out space from,” Sherbenou said. Grow Fresh Aquaponic Farms, which operates in Grand Junction, has rented the city around 600 square feet of growing space. The city is using the aquaponic system, which utilizes fish waste to fertilize the plants as they grow hydroponically.“It’s really exciting with that partnership and the available budge...

Anita Cote 1929 - 2020 - Obituary - Legacy.com

Anaheim, CA. Anita raised a family, worked in aerospace, and finished her high school education. In 1968 the family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado and bought 50 acres on the Colorado River. They raised alfalfa, tomatoes, and melons. In the winter they boarded horses. In 1971, the family returned to California and settled in Ventura County. Anita went into real estate and became a broker. She sold real estate in the 1970's and 1980's for California Oaks and Century 21. Anita always wanted to have a business so in 1986 she bought The Chocolate Place in Ventura. It was a busy time and she enjoyed making treats that made people happy. In 1989, the economy changed so Anita sold the business and moved on to another life-long interest, sewing. In the 1990's she worked at Beverly Fabrics making display items for the store. The sewing area was located on the second floor overlooking Main Street in Ventura. She enjoyed watching the daily activity and parades downtown. In 1996 she thought it would be fun to manage a Salvation Army Thrift Store and she did that for 6 years. After the Salvation Army, she worked one more year for a Title company and retired in 2004. Over the next 15 years Anita made almost 2,000 items to sell at the Senior Craft Shoppe located in downtown Ventura. She loved to sew, knit, and crochet so the shop gave her a creative outlet and she enjoyed meeting new people at the shop. Anita is survived by her daughter, Christine Cote Ring, of Ventura and one grandson, Benjamin Cote, of Bakersfield. Anita was preceded in death by her son, Timothy Cote. She was the youngest of 6 children and they also all predecease her. Due to COVID-19 regulations and restriction, a private funeral service will be held for family members only. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made in her honor to the Ventura County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 2186 Knoll Drive #A, Ventura, CA 93003. Anita was entrusted to the care of the JOSEPH P. REARDON FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICE, 757 East Main Street, Ventura, 805-643-8623.
