Deryn Davidson: Award for demonstration garden is a bright spot during tough times - The Daily Camera
Plant Select Showcase Garden Award, it felt extra-sweet. The Plant Select program is a collaboration between Colorado State University, Denver Botanic Gardens and professional horticulturists. Their goal is to “create smart plant choices for a new American Landscape inspired by the Rocky Mountain Region.” The plants are trialed and chosen based on eight attributes: flourishing with less water, habitat-friendly, tough and resilient in challenging climates, one of a kind/unique, resist disease and insects, long-lasting beauty, and noninvasive. These are all important qualities in plants that we invite into our spaces.
Our demonstration garden at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont is one of several such gardens across the state. You can glean a good amount of information from plant tags and online research, but it is helpful to see with your own eyes how plants perform after establishment or to see plant combinations growing side by side. Many demonstration gardens are in public areas and therefore always open to visitors. They can provide inspiration, a moment of outdoor respite during a busy day or a change of scenery when you want to get some fresh air.
Our demonstration areas include a Colorado native plant garden and the award-winning ... Sep 7, 2020
Shop Paulina Buckley's Wild and Whimsical Floral Creations - 5280 | The Denver Magazine
Buckley has taken every opportunity to hone her creative instincts. When she and her Colorado-born boyfriend relocated to Denver a couple of years ago, she brought her bold floral vision to play in a whole new Rocky Mountain setting.
Now, with a fresh pop-up shop in Larimer Square, she’s sharing her unconventional arrangements and funky flair for home decor at the sweet-scented Buckley House of Flowers. Customers can drop in for a drink and a chat while they wait for their bouquet, or sign up for weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly floral creations that change with the season.
Buckley House of Flowers may be small in size (measuring a mere 550 square feet), but it’s big on charm. Photo courtesy of Buckley House of Flowers
5280 Home: How did you discover your love for blooms?Paulina Buckley: I was living in Los Angeles, working at this Moroccan-inspired furniture store, and I thought, “I want to try something new.” I stumbled upon a flower shop in Venice, and I walked in there with no experience at all; I just wanted to help them out with their reception area and customer service. When I went in for an interview, they immediately had me helping clean the flowers, cleaning the buckets, and helping walk-in customers if they needed a bouquet or an arrangement. It kind of started from there.
How did you make the transition to Colorado’s floral scene? When I first moved to Denver, I was freelancing with a bunch of different florists i... Sep 7, 2020
Mountain Flowers of Aspen spreading joy through flowers - Aspen Daily News
Every sale adds up for us.ADN: What keeps you going?KA: [In July] we had a gal come up from Denver. She had planned a big, huge wedding for September and wasn’t able to do it. They decided to elope over the weekend. She called, I answered the phone, and we made a beautiful bouquet of wildflowers that really reflected her and her event. She was saying, “Oh, my fiance doesn’t want to wear a boutonniere,” and I said, “What about this? What if we made it really simple with wildflowers and wrapped it in raffia?” She said, “Yeah, yeah! OK! That’s it!” That feeling of catching fire with someone who is so excited about something. It makes it worth it being there on a Saturday morning when all my sons are out hiking and doing fun things. It’s wonderful to see that come alive.ADN: What’s one thing you want the community to know?KA: We’re well-equipped to help because we listen and we care. We’ll take the time to sit down with someone and go over what they need and whether that’s something super grand for a beautiful party or something intimate just to say “I’m sorry” between friends. We really have the ability to tailor our goods to the situation, whatever someone needs.I grew up here — I was born here. Wendy has been here for 40 years — longer than me, technically. We really want to see this community thrive and participate in that.WB: And I think the fact that we’re all in this together is something we can really get our hearts around. We all need each other.ADN: What is your favorite flower?KA: Oh goodness! I really love sweet peas and hellebore.WB: I love peonies, but I also love any flower that’s at its prime in any season. It’s too hard to have one.Name of organization: Mountain Flowers of AspenYears in business: 24Address: 103 S. 7Everyday Hero Lauren Anderson paints flower bouquets for patients staying in the hospital - The Denver Channel
DENVER — Painting has always been a sanctuary for Lauren Anderson. It's a colorful escape when life gets too dark. And now, she's sharing her gift to help others.Anderson was volunteering for UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital when she discovered many patients who were sent flowers couldn't keep them in their rooms."It just made me really sad to think if I were in the hospital and somebody I loved and who loved me sent me something like that and I couldn’t enjoy it, how upsetting that would be," she said. Then she thought of something — maybe there was a way for those patients to enjoy those creations. So she went to volunteer coordinator Jenny Ricklefs with an idea."She’s an artist and she thought that she could potentially paint those flower arrangements and give the painting to the patient because they couldn’t have the flowers," Ricklefs said. "Since that day, she's been painting beautiful watercolor bouquets." She said on Mother's Day, Anderson did one painting that went to a... May 1, 2020

AURORA OUTLIER: Southlands blooming among an industry of fading flowers - Sentinel Colorado
Those residents will need retail, he said, and Southlands will provide. He thinks economic development near Denver International Airport and Buckley Air Force base is also contributing to a healthy, regional economy.
But he thinks e-commerce is doing much more harm to businesses than people know.
“I think they are under attack by the internet,” he said. “There’s too many people shopping online and not supporting our brick and mortars.”
There are some similarities in strategy at the mostly open-air Southlands and Aurora’s indoor mall, the Town Center at Aurora, located near the Intersection of East Alameda Avenue and Interstate 225.
Both are regularly hosting events to keep folks coming into stores. Southlands created a popular “sensory-friendly Santa” event inDecember tailored for children and adults on the autism spectrum normally bugged by bright lights and too many kids. The mall also hosts holiday parades, which Hougen said he enjoys.
For its part, the Town Center is converting its old Sears space into an indoor sport emporium and separately hosting high school wrestling events that have been well-attended.
The sales tax revenue generated at these malls is crucial for the city, Hougen said.
In the Town Center, sales taxes businesses paid to the city of Aurora in 2018 passed a $5.8 million benchmark for the first time in 15 years, making the mall eligible for a significant tax rebate.
Southlands is regularly contributing more in sales tax revenue, reaching $11,420,746 in 2018 after a multi-year increase.
