Obituary: Eric Hartwell | SummitDaily.com - Summit Daily News

Eric took a trip to Colorado in 2011, fell in love with the area and packed his car arriving in Breckenridge on December 31, 2011 knowing no one. He loved Colorado and the year-round recreation it offered including snowboarding, ice fishing, hiking, biking, dirt biking and fishing. He drove back and forth to NH many times with friends joining him for the long road trip but always returning to Colorado where he felt most at peace.Support Local JournalismDonate Eric had many good friends and he considered the Cormier family his second family, Ron and Ryan his brothers. As so eloquently written by Ryan “When growing up, everyone gets to decide who their friends are going to be. You get to see who you are going to share your good decisions as well as your bad decisions with and who makes a strong impression on your life… we were as strong as blood…There was never a distance between us where we would lose touch and could always pick up where we left off in an instant.” Eric is survived by his beloved dog, Badger; his parents, Jamie and Jackie Hartwell of Santa Barbara, CA; his sister Shayna Hartwell of Santa Barbara, CA; his paternal grandparents Dick and Lois Hartwell of Stuart, FL; his maternal grandmother Linda Oja and her husband Bob of Rindge, NH; his maternal grandfather Ron Irish and his wife Tere of Sebago, ME; his aunt Amy Marro and her husband Tony of Rindge, NH; his aunt Candace Chamberlain and her husband Jim of Jaffrey, NH; his uncle Nelson Hartwell and his wife Kathy of Jaffrey, NH; his aunt Suzie Pickford and her husband S...

Lark Ascending: Getting back to the garden - Summit Daily News

I keep wondering how our garden back in Breckenridge is doing.Alan and I are away for a few weeks in Maine. Before we left Breckenridge, we tidied up everything inside and out — cleaning and vacuuming the house, mowing the lawn, weeding the flowerbeds. The daffodils were fading, but the tulips were still blooming in red, pink and yellow. In the days leading up to our departure, we checked the thick bunches of irises three times a day, hoping the purple blossoms would unfurl before we departed. Right before we took off, one did. When I first moved to Breckenridge five years ago and moved in with Alan, I didn’t even notice the flower gardens. And Alan, apparently, had not noticed them much either because the following spring the melting snow revealed three plots that were mostly messy patches of weeds. All that changed in July of that year, after we visited gardens around homes in Frisco, Keystone and Breckenridge during the Summit County Garden Tour. In Frisco, a miniature outdoor train track ran through a forest of allium, li...

A florist's advice for saving money on flowers

Kayle Walker Burns, owner of Petal and Bean Floral & Event Planning in Breckenridge, Colo. What one florist charges likely is different from other florists, and you also can expect differences if you buy flowers at a grocery store, online or from a local florist. We asked professional florists to share their top tips for buying bouquets and other items during flower-centric holidays and events.Preorder for your best chance to get what you want.According to the Society of American Florists, the ideal window for preordering flowers is three to 10 days. Preordering helps florists make sure they have the right and freshest flowers for the consumers - and ensure first availability. The closer you purchase flowers to the holiday, the greater chance of availability and the price may be affected. Valentine's Day is on a Wednesday this year, so florists expect more flower purchases in lieu of spending a weekday evening out. People are too busy with life and jobs, unlike when the holiday falls on a weekend, Drummond says. When you preorder, especially with a florist in a resort town like where Burns' shop is located in Colorado, you can be more specific in terms of what flowers you want. If you wait for the day before, or day of the holiday or special occasion, you might be limited to what the shop has on hand or the florists' choice, Burns says. For weddings, Heather Cole, owner and designer of Forever Cole Events in Oklahoma City, says it's best for couples to plan six to nine months in advance so she can secure flowers from her farm suppliers. Pictures on the internet can be deceiving.Florists know busy consumers might want to save time by purchasing flowers online or on the phone. But they encourage people to come into their shops to make the best decision when purchasing a gift or arrangements for events, such as weddings."I suggest you s... (KTVB)

Nanz, Kraft to hand out flowers to passersby

Wednesday. The flowers will be given away from 8 to 11 a.m. in front of the Nanz and Kraft store at 141 Breckenridge Lane in St. Matthews. A release said that the flower giveaway is intended "to brighten the day" of the recipients under a "petal it forward" program. Passersby will receive two flowers – one to keep and one to share, the release said. The program, developed by the Society of American Florists, is meant to spread positivity and highlight the emotional benefits of receiving flowers, the release said. The society reports that its recent survey found that: » When it comes to happiness, it’s just as good to give flowers as it is to receive: 88 percent of Americans report that giving flowers makes them feel happy, while 80 percent reported that receiving flowers makes them feel happy. » Just being around flowers improves your mood: 76 percent of Americans agree that having flowers in their home or office improves their mood. Sculpting Frigid Works of Art

There was little sleep and a lot of risk at this year's International Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge.  At 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26 in Breckenridge, the 26th International Snow Sculpture Championships began with the traditional cannon blast. In a flurry of saws, ice chippers, and trowels, 16 teams from all over the world went to work on their respective 24-ton block of snow. Each four-person team had 65 hours to turn a 12-foot tall ice rectangle into a work of art. As of Friday night, the majority of teams were still carving. Some, like Team Great Britain, were adding final details—meticulously chiseling scales onto the dragon featured in their sculpture “Tale of Two Dragons.” Others, like Team Loveland Colorado, were still forming the main body of their piece, scraping the snow to bring forth the ears of an enormous elephant head in “Bolting from Extinction."  The members of Team France, who arrived late do to a mechanical issue with their flight, were worried that they might not make the cut-off time of 10 a.m. the following morning. Their ambitious sculpture of a... (5280 | The Denver Magazine)
