Feb 1, 2020Roses for Kobe and Gianna as Lakers return to action - Rome Sentinel
It doesn’t really feel like you’re here for a game,” the 26-year-old middle school teacher from Whittier said. “It feels like you’re here for something a lot bigger than that. We didn’t even know the guy, but we feel like we did.” The music began playing once the public flowed through the doors. Several fans donned the gold T-shirts at their seats; others took pictures of the video board and the electronic ribbon scrolling the victims’ names around the upper level. Across the street from Staples Center, large crowds continued to gather for informal public mourning at a plaza loaded with flowers, balloons and hand-written messages, many on the pavement, honoring Bryant and his daughter. Large poster boards covered in signatures and messages were moved to the middle of the blocked off street separating the arena and the LA Live entertainment district. The memorabilia will be collected, inventoried and given to the Bryant family at their request. The flowers will be composted and used in plantings around the arena.

In recent years it was routine to find David Casper on a sideline, track meet or cross country invitational taking pictures, an activity that had become a favorite hobby for him.
But for those that knew him best, he was a longtime fixture in the San Gabriel Valley as a coach and teacher at Baldwin Park High School from 1962-95. He was well-known for his cross country and track and field teams.
Casper, a West Covina resident, passed away recently. He was 86.
There will be a Celebration of Life at Baldwin Park High School for Casper on Sunday at 11 a.m., and it is open to the public.
In addition to taking pictures, Casper was still an active member of the Mt. SAC Relays and its Cross Country Invitational and had served on committees supporting those sports for more than 50 years.
As a cross country coach at Baldwin Park, Casper’s teams won 13 league championships and his teams won over 500 meets in his three-plus decades in charge.
Casper was inducted into the Fresno...

Mar 2, 2017How an Old Newspaperman Who Loved Flowers Created One of LA's Most Beautiful Attractions
Mrs. Douglas beat Boddy in the primary, but then she had to face the Republican Nixon, a native of Whittier and a decorated U.S. Navy war vet. Boddy, it seems, advised him to publicly compare Douglas’ voting record to a pretty much full-on Communist politician from New York, Vito Marcantonio. The tactic worked, and Nixon was on his way. So we might never have had Nixon as president had it not been for Manchester Boddy. (Um, you could always go chain yourself to the ticket window at Descanso and protest, I guess ...)Feeling bored with the newspaper business by the late 1940s and already selling his custom-bred camellias as a side business, Boddy left the paper in 1952, devoting all his time to his beloved acres, which he’d purchased back in 1937. Eventually he sold the gardens to the city of L.A. in 1953 and retired down near San Diego. The paper folded in ’54; there’s no connection to the current Valley paper of the same name.Among the other features at Descanso Gardens (besides a Patina’s restaurant, open only on weekends), Boddy’s own home still stands, on a secluded corner of the grounds. You’re free to wander... (L.A. Weekly)
