Cooper students make kindness flowers, stars

The activity, explained principal Tina Ahn, is part of last weekend’s “1,000 Flowers” event. On Saturday, students from Vacaville’s high schools “planted seeds of love and acceptance” downtown by way of chalk flowers and positive messages drawn throughout the area. The gardening continues this week in several Vacaville schools with activities like chalk flowers, kindness rocks, other flower projects and gardening. Kindness, Ahn said, is important in schools and everywhere else.“Kindness overflows everything else, right?” she asked students in Kayla Hornbrook’s class.Wearing determined expressions, boys and girls took cues from a how-to video as well as demonstrations from their teacher. Then, they copied fold after fold, striving to be as precise as possible.“It was pretty intense,” said 9-year-old Ericka Gomez, of her salmon pink blossom. “It was nice but it was pretty hard because you had to fold so many things.” Indeed, each bunch of folds turned into a new square, which would require a new set of folds before becoming another square. Finally, as each fold was opened and reshaped, a beautiful flower emerged.By day’s end, Room 33 was festooned with multicolored blooms and a multitude of smiles.“It was pretty hard,” echoed Carson Finerty, 9. “I never made origami before. ...

Vacaville's Don Pippo remembered as generous, hard worker

He wore a white cowboy hat, was one of the good guys, a maverick of sorts and generous. The death of Vacaville resident Don Pippo is hard for the community to understand. He passed away quietly Tuesday at home in his sleep at the age of 72 — quite the contrast to how the man who marched to his own tune lived his life. Pippo wasn’t known to rest. He raised cows and hosted events at Pippo Ranch for most of the year. Weddings, picnics, festivals, parties — the ranch was a happy place with Pippo at the helm. If there was spare time, Pippo filled it. He served as Fire Chief of the Elmira Fire District, as Solano County Supervisor from 1983 to 1990, was a member of the Solano Farm Bureau and was recently elected to serve on the board of the Rural North Vacaville Water District. Pippo called Vacaville home his entire life. He played the trumpet in the National FFA Band as a teenager and saved the navy blue corduroy FFA jacket he wore then. He graduated from Vacaville High School in 1961. It seemed as if everyone knew him. Sitting around the kitchen table in the home marked by a giant metal c... (TheReporter.Com)

Vacaville's Pacific Cycle warehouse wins top Solano industrial project award

A new $35 million mega-warehouse on 32.38 acres has been built by business park developer and general contractor Buzz Oates Group of Companies at the Vacaville Business Park south of the intersection of Cessna Drive and Beechcraft Road at 2070 Cessna Dr. Pacific Cycle, Inc., a designer, marketer and distributor of bicycles and accessories, became the sole tenant in July 2015 under terms of a 12-year lease, signed before the project started. Construction started in mid-September 2014 and was completed in July 2015. Since Pacific Cycle moved to Vacaville from Napa Valley more than a decade ago, its demand for warehouse space has grown ten-fold to include space in five different warehouses. Today the company is using this new warehouse with 597,816 square feet of space, and an existing warehouse nearby at 2041 Cessna Drive totaling 337,896 square feet, for its consolidated West Coast distribution operations. In total, Pacific Cycle occupies over 935,000 square feet in the Vacaville Business Park. The bike maker’s latest lease was the largest Solano County industrial transaction in 2014. The company conducted a search lasting more than a... (North Bay Business Journal)
