Alberta’s first “dementia-friendly” communities in the southwest Calgary neighbourhood of Signal Hill and the nearby town of Okotoks.
As the country’s aging population increases and more people are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, The Brenda Strafford Foundation wants to ensure seniors are remaining in their homes as long as possible.
In a dementia-friendly community, people active in the neighbourhood — police, politicians, community groups, transportation providers and employees at local grocery stores, banks and shops, for example — are provided with training to identify people with the brain disorder and provide them the support, and understanding, that’s needed.
The training is designed to make communities more inclusive, supportive and accessible for people with dementia by heightening awareness and reducing stigma, which means people with the disorder can be independent, active citizens in the community, and remain in their homes longer.
Mike Conroy, CEO and president of The Brenda Strafford Foundation, dreams of seeing every community across the province become dementia-friendly, and to start, training is being planned for Signal Hill and Okotoks, where The Brenda Strafford Foundation operates facilities for seniors.
