Thieves target beach enclave’s valuable flowers - The Mercury News
Baldwin said: “They are cutting the part of the tree that can propagate new plants.”
Two years ago, similar thefts were reported in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood.
Commenting on the earlier case, Don Bergamini, president of the Northern California Camellia Society, said the flowers are expensive because the bushes grow slowly. A large plant in the ground could go for $200 to $400, he said.
A San Jose woman whose camellia bush was hacked speculated that the culprit might be an unscrupulous florist looking to make a quick buck or a desperate bride seeking free foliage for wedding arrangements.

Bay Nature Magazine: Why Do Flowers Exist? - Bay Nature
Among these flowers are a few serpentine endemics—plants that can only grow on serpentine soil. Henry Coe State Park south of San Jose is HUGE!! But the rangers recommend Manzanita Point Road for the best display. Hiking here anytime is great, but the chance to see the gorgeous wildflowers of spring is dessert.

Volunteers band together to revive recycled-bouquet program
Random Acts of Flowers: Blossom Buddies in Menlo Park and Flowers of Comfort in San Jose.
Many of the volunteers have maintained their earlier relationships with local donor retailers, florists and markets.
"There's nothing that excites us as much as a bucket of day-old or week-old flowers," said Palo Alto resident Barbara Levin, as the group cheered the arrival of a new bucket of leftovers from Mills Florist. Levin is a longtime volunteer who routinely collects cast-offs from Trader Joe's in Palo Alto. Others pick up from Trader Joe's in Menlo Park and a branch of Whole Foods.
"We never know what flowers or vases we're going to have to work with, so every time we come in it's a new and interesting experience and it's a way of showing off our creative side," Levin said.
The women have no trouble unpacking funeral wreaths and other event-specific arrangements to "create something more interesting," Klause said. But in some cases the used flowers are not fresh enough for a second life and must be discarded.
Volunteer Sandra Bachman, a Woodside resident, said her favorite place to deliver is Stanford University Hospital.
"To go in and see patients that do not have any flowers or visitors and walk in with a bouquet and for five minutes they forget about their problems," Bachman said. "They open their eyes and to get that smile, and to hear through that family what a difference that can make for healing ... A lot of the nurses say it helps them heal. It brings the outside in, the sunshine in."

Three-star safety Thaiger Flowers inspired by late mentor
He's encouraged by the fact a number of schools have been in contact and talking about a potential offer.
"I've talked with San Jose State, UC Davis, Army and Cal Poly and they could all be offering soon," said Flowers.
Several coaches have stopped by the Central campus during the evaluation period to check on Flowers and more are expected throughout the spring.
"We've had USC, Arizona, San Jose State, Arizona State, Colorado, BYU and Iowa State all come by this spring so far," said Flowers.
Flowers is planning on a couple of in-state camps this summer.
"I plan on going to a UCLA camp at the beginning of June and a Stanford camp mid-June," said Flowers. "I didn't make any trips to any schools for spring ball."
Nevada was the first offer and there is a connection there for Flowers as Nevada cornerbacks coach Courtney Viney is a Fresno native himself and he too was trained and mentored by Perry.
Viney played under Perry at Fresno (Calif.) Edison and with him at DB Guru before Viney entered the college coaching ranks.
So naturally, Viney and Flowers have one of the best relationships, with Perry at the center of it and their Fresno connection also a part of it.
"I have the best relationships with Coach Viney at Nevada and Coach (Sean) Saturnio at Army," said Flowers.
And those schools are among the ones recruiting him the hardest.
"I'd say Army, UC Davis and Nevada are recruiting me the hardest," said Flowers.
Still, with just one option under his belt, he's a ways off from making a decision, let alone naming a favorite.
"Right now, I don't have a time frame for my decision because I only have one offer and I don't have a favorite right now because I'm looking for more offers," said Flowers.
A three-star on 247Sports, Flowers is ranked as the No. 126 safety nationally in the 2019 class.
