Visitors honor San Bernardino terror attack victims with flowers, prayers at memorial

The day this happened, we could hear the sirens,” said Mill Center supervisor Sharri Carroll. A short while later, at least 100 cyclists from Redlands-based Ride Yourself Fit bike club rode from Redlands to Waterman Avenue and Orange Show Road. The route was 14 miles with 22 turns to honor the 14 people killed and 22 wounded in the attack. San Bernardino graphic artist Juan Garcia-Ruiz, who designed the SB Strong logo in the aftermath of the attack, met the cyclists for a moment of silence after designing the ride bib cyclists wore on their chests that carried the Dec. 2 date and Roman numerals XIV.XXII, or 14.22. “These are wounds that will probably never be healed,” Garcia-Ruiz said. Laura Runyon, 24, of San Bernardino also stopped by the memorial to pay her respects. “I have friends who work in the (IRC) buildings,” she said. At 11:05 a.m., four more women — all San Bernardino County employees — stopped by with candles, which couldn’t be lit because of heavy winds, or to read victims’ names on a sign. For several hours, three women from The Way World Outreach of San Bernardino stood near a table where they offered hot chocolate, M&Ms and prayers to anyone who showed up. “We’re here to comfort them,” outreach member Marie Cabrera said. “If they just need a shoulder to cry on, we’re here.” ... Try impatiens for colorful, easy-to-grow flowers

Want beautiful flowers for much of the year? What about a hanging basket overflowing with flowers or a container? Then you should try impatiens, and Redlands is a perfect place for growing them. These vigorous plants will bloom in rainbows of color and they need no deadheading. They are available in a variety of vibrant to delicate colors, and their blossoms range from single blooms to almost rose-like multi-petal flowers. They can overwinter in Redlands and will continue to increase in size with little fertilizer. Even though impatiens benefit from a balanced fertilizer, too much nitrogen tends to produce only lush foliage and prevents flower formation. Impatiens are found around the world, in the tropics, in Europe, in Asia and in North America. There are more than 1,000 known species of impatiens but only three are commonly used today. Impatiens walleriana is the common garden impatiens, also known as Impatiens sultanii. It is native to Zanzibar and was named for the sultan of Zanzibar. Impatiens balsamina has a long horticultural history. It was grown by Thomas Jefferson and was once quite popular. Impatiens hawkeri is native to Papua, New Guinea, and was developed with researchers at Long... (Redlands Daily Facts)
