Farmers markets make changes to protect customers buying fresh food and flowers - KEYT

Ventura County OXNARD, Calif. Farmers markets like the one in the Channel Islands Harbor chose to stay open on Sunday, but it was far from business as usual Steve Turner of Oxnard said, " We are happy to be able to come and get our produce, yeah, it is nice to come a little earlier when there are not as many people." Shoppers such as Turner and his nephew noticed social distancing signs around the market. Jesse Petit of Ventura said, "It is a little hard to stay that far away." Some seller chose not to give away samples. Rafael Apodaca sells dried fruit and cashew butter. "It is kind of different because we can't sample anything and so most of our products we sell are based on our sampling and so because we are not sampling people are not coming as much and it is kind of infecting our income," said Apodaca. Several florists put out their colorful blooms. Orchid growers said they had hoped to make sales at the Santa Barbara International Orchid Show. Amber Gomez of G...

Where to see the best wildflower shows around Los Angeles

Here’s a trail map of the park that shows where to start your hike. Park entrances along Highway 1 are about 15 miles south of Oxnard.Info: Point Mugu State ParkNorthThe Antelope Valley California State Poppy Reserve in Lancaster wasn't expecting much this wildflower season. The surprise came in mid-March when pockets of poppies unfurled in their golden glory.A little more rain and moderate temperatures kept everything in balance. Now, intense streaks of orange can be seen on the high desert hillsides on the reserve's eastern side. You can walk right up to them (but not through them, please) on a 1.5-mile hike to Vista Point.Colors become more intense the closer you get, and look too for soft purple hillsides (lacy phacelia) and patches of yellow (goldfields). The bloom is expected to last until mid-April.The reserve recommends visiting during the week. Swarms of weekend visitors have caused parking lots to temporarily close and traffic jams at the entrance on Lancaster Road. And don’t bring your dog; they’re not allowed. To avoid the crush, stop alongside nearby roads where there are brilliant displays too. Just take care to pull off the shoulder and not impede traffic. One more tip: Take San Francisquito Canyon instead of Highway 14 as you head to Lancaster. It’s a road through greened-up hills that passes by Lake Elizabeth.Info: Antelope Valley California State Poppy Reserve,15101 Lancaster Rd, Lancaster; (661) 724-1180SoutheastEvery week in spring, the Wild Flower Hotline run by the Theodore Payne Foundation in Sun Valley points wildflower lovers to good viewing places.Recent recommendations have included Ronald W. Caspers Wilderness Park in San Juan Capistrano, which has California poppies but also varieties of lupine, bright red coastal paintbrush and big white swords of chaparral yucca. The place to see it all is the East Ridge Trail.Info:Caspers Wilderness Park, 33401 Ortega Highway, San Juan Capistrano; (949) 923-2210Poppies are showy now in other parts of Orange County too: Walker Canyon in Lake Elsinore (very near Interstate 15) and Weir and Santiago canyons. You can access the Wild Flower Hotline online or by calling (818) 768-1802, Ext. 7.ALSOThanks to abundant snow, the West can expect a long, rollicking river rafting seasonHere's where to see the magnificent waterfalls that have returned to SoCal after the big rainsEverything's coming up primroses and poppies and ranunculuses, but these blooms won't last much longerThe Netherlands' original pop-up tulip garden opens. Check garden soil for proper nutrients after heavy winter rains

After a rainy winter, now is the time to take steps to make sure garden and landscape soil is ready for spring planting, says Agromin, an Oxnard-based manufacturer of earth-friendly compost products made from organic material collected from more than 50 California cities.“Heavy rains can leach out important nutrients from topsoil,” says Bill Camarillo, Agromin’s CEO.“Without the proper nutrients, plants and trees can’t grow to their potential. The ideal garden soil should be dark and crumbly to the touch. If it’s not, you’ll need to prep the soil before planting.”Camarillo suggests adding compost with nitrogen and the proper pH balance. “Your local garden center has compost for all types of soil,” he says. “If you have clay soil, you want compost that will keep soil loose and workable. For sandy soil, select compost that adds structure to the soil, usually with organic humus. For soil somewhere in between, all-purpose garden soil conditioners work fine.” Because of topsoil erosion, Camarillo recommends mixing compost into the first few inches of soil around trees, shrubs, flowers and ground cover. While rain followed by w...
