Although the shop has delivered floral ar­rangements as far as Chula Vista, Oceanside or Coronado for customers, Lewis says some of the more special arrangements are for return customers who she has seen grow up. “I’ve done flowers for prom and later on been asked to do wedding flowers for the same per­son then a few years later I’m doing their an­niversary flowers and baby shower arrange­ments,” Lewis said. She has a team she frequently works with that she calls the Wedding Power team and says she has had the chance to decorate many backyard weddings. While Valentine’s day is the biggest single workday of the year, the entire week surrounding Mother’s day is a busy one for Lewis. Constantly on the lookout for unique con­tainers, the florist asks about creative recepta­cles when she spots them in local shops, then sources the vendor so she can order them for use in her business. Lewis also says that she performs a steady supply of deliveries to Alpine cemetery on Christmas and on individual birthdays, many of which are ordered by family members who live elsewhere. Additionally, she has several secret custom­ers who ensure that a loved one continues to re­ceive flowers after a loved one has passed away. She says that peonies are the hardest flow­ers to find as they enjoy a relatively short bloom season and although popular, aren’t easy to source. The grant will support the school’s language literacy garden (bilingual) with its salsa and pizza gardens. The funds will replace a small greenhouse and create a Zero Waste Club composting program.“Berry Good Food has been a tremendous partner to the Abraxas High School Garden,” said Bob Lutticken, who teaches biology, agriculture and aquaponics, in a statement. “In 2018, we were awarded a BGF grant that helped fix our drip system, purchase 8,000 aquaponic lettuce plugs, and provide all the seeds for our spring and summer harvest.” With the grant’s help, Lutticken added, the school plans to expand on its commitment to donating produce to the needy which, to date, totals more than 7,000 pounds.The awards are funded by Berry Good Food’s annual dinner, “Seeds for the Future,” which includes a rotating lineup of San Diego chefs known for sustainable sourcing. Halifax County Flower Show produces showstoppers

The Garden Club of the Halifax Country Flower Show, a Garden Club of America Show, at Oceanside Country Club in Ormond Beach.Mary Jo Harrington was chairman for the show, which took months of work, club members said.Among the other showstoppers were the seasonal blooms, such as huge amaryllis flowers.But the entries weren't just limited to potted plants. Club members and others competed in a photo contest and floral design, including standalone designs and table settings. A teapot brimmed over with roses in the "Tea and White Gloves" display. A striking arrangement of red anthuriums and bright orange flowers sat in a large metal ring. They call me the hoarder of plants.”At the flower show on Wednesday, March 21, at the Oceanside Country Club, Moore earned the Catherine Beattie Medal, which values a plant’s vibrancy, prime condition and perfection of grooming; the Clarissa Willemsen Horticulture Propagation Award, showcasing a plant in prime condition with flawless grooming that’s difficult to grow; and the Rosie Jones Horticulture Award, featuring a plant of exceptional visual appeal that reflects the spirit of growing with joy and enthusiasm.“It’s the competition; it’s not really about winning,” Moore said. “And also, being able to educate people about how much fun plants can be. You can go out and see a flower and say, ‘Ah, this is gorgeous,’ then you feel good because this flower looks so beautiful.”Moore said she likes “weird” plants — ones you wouldn’t normally see, like Pachypodium, native of Madagascar, for which she earned the Catherine Beattie Medal.On a different table, a blue ribbon winner of Moore’s features a variety of succulents planted intricately into a piece of wood, which Moore said is a base she challenges herself with.“I go to different lumber yards, and sometimes I’ll find just little pieces of wood thrown around,” Moore said. “But it has to either be hard wood or an old piece of cypress or an old piece of red wood because those don’t rot.”After finding wood that meets her standards, she sits it down in her home and leaves it there for months at a time before using it for her gardening.She said that eventually, she’ll walk by the piece of wood and just suddenly know what she wants to make of it — a master gardener’s instinct.Moore said educating the public about gardening is part of why she loves the pastime.“I think children need to get more involved in gardening,” she said. “Obviously, school gardens are a big help because it teaches children where plants come from and what they should eat versus what not.
