Apr 27, 2017Fans of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park fight two invasive plants threatening wildflowers
German sunflower family expert Gerhard Wagenitz, with help from plant geneticists in Spain.McDonald said the plant is believed to have come from Newport Beach’s Upper Newport Bay Preserve – some suspect during pond grading — and is now also in Chula Vista. In January, he and UC Riverside Herbarium Curator Andy Selters confirmed the preserve’s plant – recently determined to be the first-known sighting on this continent in about 30 years — is the same one at Anza-Borrego.Volutaria thrives in semi-arid to desert habitats. Borrego Springs has the worst infestation, said McDonald, who’s helping to develop plans to manage Volutaria and Sahara mustard.More than 20 Volutaria populations have now been found within five miles of Borrego Springs, with “millions” in one field, said McDonald and Matthews, of Borrego Springs and Whidbey Island, Wash. The plant also is spreading in Chile’s Atacama Desert, where rainfall is about 1 inch per year — far less than California deserts.Anza-Borrego gets 5 to 6 inches of rain most years and it received at least 2.9 inches annually during the five-year drought. Volutaria flowered each year. Wildflowers struggled.Less than two inches of rain for an extended period could doom native flowers, whose dormant seeds would die.“If California had a really severe drought, Volutaria should still be able to survive, but most of the native plants in California wouldn’t,” McDonald said.Weeds usually mature earlier and produce more seeds than annual native plants, especially wildflowers.Volutaria also grows in parts of North Africa and southern Spain, getting up to 16 inches of rain, so the plant could survive near California’s coasts and foothills. Scientists speculate a likely possibility is that Volutaria tubuliflora could severely reduce native plant populations, he said. That could devastate native biodiversity.Still a ChanceSahara mustard is here to stay. But Dice, McDonald, Hendrickson and others believe there’s still a chance to stop Volutaria tubuliflora from spreading farther into the state park, where rugged terrain would stymie elimination, and then across Southern California. It’s been classified as a noxious weed, which helps raise funding and legal standing to remove it from private Borrego Springs property, where 90 percent of it is. The other 10 percent grows in the state park.On March 11, Matthews noticed most Volutaria sat near the road. Carried on tires and people’s shoes, the plants grow in disturbed areas along roads, in abandoned farm fields and graded areas, and around giant metal sculptures in the desert. It’s crucial people clean equipment, shoes, and tires before and after visiting new ecosystems and Volutaria sites.Established Volutaria spreads by wind, water and wildlife. So the plant is also found in windblown sandy areas such as Coyote Canyon — areas that wildflowers like.By Friday, March 31, the Volutaria remaining in or near Borrego Springs were drying up and leaving seeds. Some people fighting the plant, including Matthews, were preparing to leave for the summer. But Matthews is obsessed with defeating the plant. She’ll be back at it next fall.“You hit it hard, you hit it early — and you wait ‘til the next season,” she said. (Press-Enterprise)
