December in Los Angeles — leaf color change will be less vivid than when we are visited by colder weather during these months. Ginkgo biloba, Modesto ash (Fraxinus velutina cv. Modesto), and Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra cv. italica) are three trees whose foliage turns brilliant gold this time of year. Ginkgo has a vertical growth habit and charming fan-shaped leaves. Unfortunately, its reputation in some quarters for inhibiting the aging process is a myth. While early studies showed that ginkgo leaf extract did slightly improve cognitive function, subsequent studies have disproven this claim. Ginkgo seeds are edible when roasted – and are considered a delicacy in the Far East — but they can also have toxic side effects. An indisputable drawback to the seeds is the malodorous pulp that surrounds them. However, ginkgos are dioecious, meaning trees are either male or female, with females being the foul-smelling seed bearers so that ginkgo trees purchased in nurseries nowadays are invariably males. Modesto ash, famous for its glittery foliage at this time of year, is susceptible to a variety of insect pests and diseases and, although established specimens are seen quite frequently throughout the Valley, it is not planted much these days. Lombardy poplar is a columnar specimen found locally at Warner Center. It is a perfect candidate for creating a stately entrance planted on either side of a long driveway although its surface roots can eventually be a problem. There are three local trees whose foliage changes to the classic fiery colors associated with the maples of northern climes: crepe myrtle, liquidambar, and Chinese tallow tree (Sapium sebiferum), whose luminescent foliage makes it the most memorable of local trees that turn color during this season. David Casper, longtime Baldwin Park cross country and track coach, dies - The San Gabriel Valley Tribune

Casper served as a medic in the United States Army and later was given his first cross country and track coaching job at Modesto High. Casper and his family moved to Baldwin Park in 1962, where he taught electronics and math and coached the cross country and track teams. He retired in 1995 and took up photography, which kept him involved in sports long after his coaching career ended. The Casper family is asking those who wish contribute in his name to donate to the Baldwin Park Cross County team, to Mt. SAC Athletics for a memorial to be placed under the stadium or flowers at Sunday’s Celebration of Life.

Mass for St. Patrick's pastor set for Friday

After he left four years ago to start his sabbatical to fulfill a lifelong dream of starting a Catholic church television station that would air the Latin Mass every day, he began posting his blog, Traditional Catholic Priest, until his illness. A friend kept the blog running when he became too ill to continue. While at St. Patrick’s, he also hosted a radio program in Spanish out of Stockton.Ordained on May 24, 1997, Father Carota attended Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon. Prior to his assignment at St. Patrick’s, he served as assistant pastor at St. George Parish in Stockton, St. Jude Parish in Ceres, Our Lady of Fatima in Modesto, and St. Catherine of Sienna in Phoenix, Arizona. For many years, he also did missionary work in Malinasco, Mexico. At St. Patrick’s in Ripon, he built the Chapel of the Holy Angels next to the rectory “through prayer, sacrifice and the help of the (parish) community.” Under his watch, the parish also purchased the 22-acre property next to the chapel in anticipation of the church’s future expansion, or when Highway 120 would be widened thereby affecting the present church building.Father Carota attended Watsonville High School and graduated from Carleton University in Canada. Prior to entering the seminary as a late vocation, he was a successful Realtor in Santa Cruz. He also served as a missionary in Brazil. While living in Santa Cruz, he started the St. Francis Catholic Soup Kitchen as well as Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Housing Shelter. It was his work with the poor which planted the seed for his late vocation, he said in an interview with the Manteca Bulletin shortly before his sabbatical.
