Gardening: This botanical garden is a hidden gem with free admission - OCRegister

Two members of the Los Angeles City Council want to legalize sidewalk vendors, arguing it will help people who fear deportation in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to ship out millions who are in the country illegally. Joe Buscaino and Curren Price sent a letter Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, to their fellow council members outlining a policy to decriminalize and regulate street vending. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes, File)
The Botanical Garden is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The entrance is on the corner of Hilgard and Le Conte Avenues. It’s a great outlet for the whole family with many exotic plants to ogle, especially in the cactus and succulent section. There are benches next to a large pond where you can sit and have lunch a few feet away from what is probably the biggest ongoing convention of turtles — who sun themselves unabashedly on the pond’s edge – for miles around. You can even bring a group and gather with appropriate social distancing in a small amphitheater that is secluded within the garden.
One of the outstanding features of the garden is a large slope near the pond that is planted entirely with bromeliads. Last week I wrote about a bromeliad I that I had never seen before (Puya chilensis) and I am about to do that again. The plant in question is Quesnelia testudo, or turtle-head bromeliad. Its genus name honors the plant explorer Martin Quisnel and its species name testudo means turtle in Latin, a moniker given on account of the way the bromeliad’s bulbous flower head extrudes from the foliage. How ironic that it should be situated just a few feet away from the turtle convention mentioned above. It can grow in eithe... Jun 19, 2020

Coronavirus hit California's cut-flower industry at the worst time - Los Angeles Times
Michael Mellano, CEO of Mellano & Co., a third-generation grower and wholesaler headquartered in Los Angeles’ downtown Flower District. “This is our busiest and most profitable time of the year,” Mellano said. “So, it’s absolutely the worst time for something like this to happen.”
Mellano said he laid off more than 90% of his staff and went into survival mode, hoping to gear up his Southern California and Las Vegas distribution hub when the market revives. There probably won’t be a grand reopening for Lompoc-based Ocean View Flowers, which produced 40 million stems only two years ago. Its produce-growing parent company, Santa Barbara Farms, closed the flower operation permanently, according to company and industry sources. Eufloria, whose boutique roses have adorned New Year’s Day floats in Pasadena and thoroughbred horses at Churchill Downs, announced it would shut down its Nipomo farm on March 18. It laid off most of its workers and donated unsold stems to hospitals and nursing homes. But such was the outcry from fans and clients, Eufloria reopened two days later.
“We are starting to bring some of that employment back,” sales manager Chad Nelson said. “We want to make sure that we’re doing things to keep [plants] producing the way that they should, and if and when this market does come back, then figure out how we can handle those orders.”
Coastal farms from San Diego County through Humboldt County likewise laid off most of their workers and went into dormancy at the very time when they usually earn the bulk of revenue — the string of holidays from Valentine’s Day through Mother’s Day. Chain groceries were among the first to cancel orders, said F.J. Trzuskowski, vice president of sales for Washington-based Continental Floral Greens, which grows the “supporting cast” green foliage for bouquets on three California farms.
“There was no forewarning of this. It was like, ‘Hey, stop all shipments starting now,’” Trzuskowski said. “Then with social distancing, all of a sudden the wholesaler can’t be open to the public. It was a very quick stop to the industry.”Mellano said he also was hit hard by cancellations of events such as conferences... Mar 19, 2020
Eight places to see wildflowers in Southern California - Los Angeles Times
Wildflowers erupted in 2017 at Carrizo Plain National Monument in San Luis Obsipo County. (Francine Orr/ Los Angeles Times)
Info: Carrizo Plain National Monument; wildflower information (805) 475-2035; visitors center (805) 475-2131. Download map and guide. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve
What needs to happen for a good bloom: Lots of rain.If the best happens: Visitors can gaze upon orange California poppies spread across the park’s 1,700 acres. Also lupine, cream cups, goldfields, owl’s clover and yellow daisy-like coreopsis. This year, you’ll see patchy areas of blooms, not a carpet like last year. Visitors now can see “belly flowers” such as pygmy-leaved lupine, red maids and tiny white forget-me-nots.Watch out for: Dehydration. It’s high-desert grassland, so drink plenty of water. Give rattlesnakes space. Carpool if possible. Watch for visitors who may be photo-focused and oblivious to cars. Info: California Poppy Reserve, (661) 724-1180. $10 per vehicle; $9 with a senior (62 years and older) in vehicle; $5 with Disabled Discount Pass. Open sunrise to sunset. Wildflower season through May. No drones and no dogs (other than trained service animals).
Walker Canyon, Lake Elsinore
The superbloom in 2019 brought many visitors to Walker Canyon.(Los Angeles Times)
What needs to happen for a good bloom: Lots of rain, sunshine and some wind. This year poppies are germinating slowly, so a super bloom is unlikely. If the best happens: You may see hills blanketed with California poppies covering acres of desert chaparral. Blue dicks, yellow-petaled monolopias, beavertail cactus, wishbone bush, Coulter’s matilija poppies andspineflowers also grow here.Watch out for: Crowds. Last year’s superbloom drew so many visitors — about 150,000 on a mid-March weekend — that the trails looked like lines outside big-box stores on Black Friday. Carry plenty of water and stay on the trail to avoid rattlesnakes.Info: Walker Canyon; (951) 674-3124, lake-elsinore.org/poppies. Free public trails. No dogs except registered service animals.
