Local florists and restaurants work against shortages for Mother's Day - Desert Sun

Hall said. Local restaurants selling meals this weekend for Mother's Day also face challenges. Both LG's Steakhouse locations in Palm Springs and La Quinta are reopening for carryout. Manager Daniel Phelps said they plan to be open on Sunday and are still putting together a Mother's Day special, adding "We're a little late to the party, but we're also a little late to the delivery game as well." The restaurant will offer cooked options and are looking into offering raw options customers can grill or broil at home, but are looking into attaining adequate supply to maintain demand after coronavirus outbreaks closed several American meatpacking facilities in recent weeks. "The supply of prime beef is constricted because prime beef goes to restaurants and high end grocery stores as opposed to fast food chains of the world, so the supply and demand for prime beef has been hit hard," Phelps said. "We're looking at 20%-25% of what we order showing up. The distributors are looking for hundreds of cases and getting less than 100 to meet a Tuesday delivery." LG's has relationships with other distributors, but Phelps said it remains more of a challenge than back in February. Prices of beef have also gone up in an uncertain economy. "As a prime steak restaurant our prices are higher anyway and we're exploring ways to bring our prices down during this time to make ourselves open to the family consumer," Phelps said. "It's definitely a struggle and we entered into this with having a lower price menu, and inventory and pricing makes it difficult." TRIO in Palm Springs is offering a choice of chicken marsala, prime rib or wild mushroom linguini that includes the house salad and the TRIO brownie for Mother's Day. Owner Tony Marchese said the restaurant is receiving orders but is usually busier during Mother's Day. "We're getting a good response, but nothing like it was Mother's Day. We usually serve over 500 people," Marchese said. Marchese said that the prime rib specials the restaurant offers are popular year round and it would hurt his business if it wasn't on the menu. He has 150 orders for the entree this weekend. "Those (prime rib specials) have been really successful for me," Marchese said. "Today was the first time I've heard there might be an issue, but (the supplier) assured me it's coming." But despite shortages of specific items, Hall said that customers have been "insanely understanding" when it comes to the global situation businesses face. "The customers we've talked to, we've had to make a lot of date changes on deliveries because we've had a reduced staff based on (social distancing) rules," Hall said. "Everyone has been understanding, whereas in the past we have had customers call after we've sent out pictures of what their arrangement looks like beforehand, and they might call and say 'The flowers are orange and not yellow.' We're not getting any of that. I think people are happy we're open and doing our best." Desert Sun reporter Brian Blueskye covers arts and entertainment. Indian Wells tennis tournament's flower walls an Instagram sensation - The Desert Sun

And the person responsible for bringing the flower walls and vision to life is Briana DeAztlan of La Quinta, owner of Eventscape International. She loves that people are so drawn to the wall. "Whenever there's anything living or floral, it makes people happy immediately and so that's why you're seeing it shown on Instagram and then the fact that BNP's branding could be integrated is really awesome. So yeah, it's doing what it was intended to do which is really get people to interact and its exciting for us to see that it's working," she said. Her event company has been working with the tennis tournament for close to 30 years. They provide flowers and plants in addition to what is already planted on the grounds to really drive home and emphasize the "garden" aspect of the venue. She took over the family company about eight years ago and remembers as a kid helping out when it was held at the now-called, Hyatt Regency Indian Wells. "I would come out and we would do the flowers and once in a while we could watch a match and it was such a small tournament then it was just really fun to walk around and see all the up and coming players. I remember watching Venus Williams when she was like 16 and everyone was so excited because she was so exciting to watch," said DeAztlan. Venus Williams is now 37 and is in the quarterfinals here this year and plays Thursday against Carla Suarez Navarro. She beat her sister Serena Williams on Monday in a historic match-up. This year, DeAztlan estimates that her company brought in an additional 8,000 to 10,000 plants that help make up the various flower walls and the moveable planters set up all over the stadium. "We've got quite a few lifted planters with trees and flowers in them. And they're just sitting above the ground. A lot of people don't notice that they're in planters that we've put up just for the tournament and that's sort of the point - that it just look permanent. It's an added layer that's not always here," she said. READ MORE: Venus...
