Gardening: Spangle-area gardener receives June garden of the month honor

Spokane's four-season mishmash of microclimates. Just ask Carolyn and Monty Nesbitt when family pulled them from Indio, California, to the scabland area just west of Spangle 10 years ago. After gardening in a year-round climate Carolyn said her biggest challenge was figuring out when it was really spring. "Everyone said you couldn't plant until the snow was off Mica Peak," she said. "That didn't happen until late May!" Then there was figuring out what USDA zone her basalt rock microclimate was in. "I grew all kinds of citrus trees in Indio." But garden she did, and she recently won the June Garden of the Month contest from the Inland Empire Gardeners. The Nesbitts' garden has sweeping views of the basalt outcrops and swales of still-green grass and gnarly pines characteristic of the channeled scablands. Building off the natural landscape, Carolyn filled the beds around their house with perennials and wildflowers with a few trees and shrubs thrown in for interest. In beds right off her deck, Johnny jump-ups were filling the spaces left from the Oriental poppies that bloomed earlier in the season. At the back of the bed, several clematis climbed a fence that backed int...

Miss The Anza-Borrego Bloom? The Mojave's Flowers are Just Getting Started

Colorado Desert's bloom extends all the way to its northern edges, as for example in the eastern Coachella Valley.Verbena and desert sunflowers near Indio Photo: Louise MathiasMeanwhile, over much of the Mojave Desert, there are indeed flowers in bloom, but they tend so far to stick to the little islands of protected microclimates underneath larger shrubs like creosote bush.Flowers cluster at the base of a creosote bush in the Sheephole Valley Wilderness  Photo: Chris ClarkeNot that there's sparse color in the Mojave. Those creosotes are bearing their own diminutive yellow flowers, and other shrubs are putting on a show as well: especially bladderpod, a reliable source of bright yellow even in the driest desert springs.Bladderpod in bloom Photo: Chris ClarkeBut even in the Mojave, the bare spots between the shrubs are beginning to show some color. Around Joshua Tree National Park this week, it doesn't take much exploring to find one of the desert's most delicate flowers: Eschscholzia minutiflora, a close relative of the California poppy whose flowers are usually less than a half inch in diameter.Eschscholzia minutiflora  Photo: Chris ClarkeLook for these poppies especially along roadside berms, the edges of dry washes, and other places where their taproots can send themselves well down into the desert's gravelly soil.  As long as you're on your stomach admiring the poppies, you might as well look for some woolly daisies too: their bright yellow blossoms are starting to punctuate the Mojave's hillsides now, but they're small enough that you could easily miss them if you're not careful.Woolly daisy Photo: Chris ClarkeThere are other lone flowers coming up through the Mojave gravel as well, like the spectacle pod in the photo at the top of this post, desert sunflowers, and the the surprisingly complex flowers of desert salsify. Desert salsify Photo: Chris ClarkeYou can also find increasing amounts ...

John Benoit's funeral service held in La Quinta

Corona Police Department and later the California Highway Patrol, where he advanced to the rank of commander of the CHP's Indio station before his retirement in 2001. Benoit's first elected position was on the Desert Sands Unified School District Board of Education. In 2002, he ran for a state Assembly seat as a Republican and served three terms before being elected in 2008 to the state Senate, where he championed Second Amendment rights, pushed for the federal government to take responsibility for the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants in state prisons and generally advocated less bureaucracy. In August 2009, then-Supervisor Roy Wilson stepped down for health reasons, and before his death days later, endorsed Benoit as his replacement. In November 2009, then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed the senator to serve out the remainder of Wilson's term. Benoit was elected to the Board of Supervisors in his own right the following year. In lieu of flowers, the Benoit family requested that donations be made to the United Way of the Desert, P.O. Box 13210, Palm Desert, CA 92255. (KESQ)
