Downey Rose Parade flowers lead to a trail of aloha - The Downey Patriot

DOWNEY — Two days after the Rose Parade I went to see our awesome prize-winning Rose Parade float. It had been towed back home to Downey and was on display on a sunny Friday noontime in the parking lot at the Embassy Suites. As always the Downey Rose Float Association was selling pins, t-shirts and flowers fresh from the float as souvenirs. I bought an orange rose, and a saffron one, for my two hair-styling geniuses, Marina and Yolanda at Young Again, and then I thought I would take an orchid spray to some people I’d interviewed, who have been in business in Downey since forever. Little did I expect the flowers would become a trail of Aloha.As I drove past Exotic Hawaiian Apparel, their windows in Firestone Boulevard were empty and when I turned into the back lot, the door was locked. Early-Blooming Flowers Beckon Spring's Arrival at Wesleyan - Wesleyan Connection

Longtime Hutchens Salesman Downey Dies

Hutchens Industries Southeast Regional Sales Manager James Arthur Downey passed away on April 16 from pancreatic cancer.Downey, of Chelsea, Alabama, had been with Hutchens Industries for almost 12 years. His dedication and commitment to his customers has been an integral part of Hutchens’ success and growth.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Downey’s honor to Saint Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church Building Fund (P.O. Winning Floats From 2017 Rose Parade

Another category in the same vein is the International Trophy for “most beautiful entry from outside the United States and District of Columbia.” China Airlines won this award for their float “Return To the Beauty of Taiwan.” It featured smiling dancers waving multicolored fans. The Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee float won the Princesses’ Award for the most beautiful float. Two awards are given out to floats that must be 35' and under in length. The Tournament Volunteers Trophy is awarded to the float with the “Best floral design of Parade theme 35' in length and under.” This year’s winner was “Be Your Own Knight,” by The Torrance Rose Float Association. The winner of the Princess’ Trophy, pictured above, is the “Most beautiful float 35' and under.” The Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee, Inc. won the Princess’ Trophy for their float, “Doing Good in the World.” The design of this float, with its enormous pink dragon, was meant to empower the Rotary Foundation on their 100th anniversary of service. Members of the Rotary Foundation travel the world and complete service projects for people in need. The Netflix float “Soar Beyond Imagination” was over 55' in length. [Image by Alberto E. This award is only given to floats that exceed 55' in length. Netflix made it and called their float “Soar Beyond Imagination.” The different categories and qualifications make it possible for community organizations, companies, volunteers, and paid float designers to all contribute their skills to the floats in the parade and have a chance at a coveted award. The theme of this year’s Rose Parade was “Echoes of Success” to emphasize how success and involvement resonate throughout a community. The organizations and people who worked on the floats spread their dedication and talent through the parade. Downey Rose Float Association's “The Gold Rush” Wins Governor's Trophy

By Brian Hews The city of Downey’s Gold Rush float won the Governor’s Trophy for best depiction of life in California. Riding on the float were Miss Downey and Former Supervisor Don Knabe along with his wife Julie and Kelly Roberts the 47-year-old construction chairman for the Downey Rose Float Assn. who is also a Downey resident. Former LA County Supervisor Don Knabe with his wife Julie in front of Downey’s float before starting the parade. Knabe told HMG-CN, “it was an honor for Julie and I to be able to ride on Downey’s beautiful float. The work the volunteers and the City put into the float was amazing, and the award was testament to their hard work. Julie and I will never forget this experience.” Downey’s float was designed, built and decorated by volunteers. It costs over $90,000 with the flowers alone costing ten of thousands along with the structure of the float itself. The float featured a working roller coaster that relied on gravity.
