Mar 23, 2017Native flowers aren't the only plants in 'super-bloom' this spring — nasty weeds have also flourished
At Ballona Wetlands, a 600-acre preserve near Culver City and just north of Los Angeles International Airport, native buckwheat plants that sustain a colony of federally endangered El Segundo blue butterflies have been overwhelmed by tall, lush stands of terracina spurge and garland chrysanthemum.Friends of Ballona Wetlands, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring the preserve nourished by natural tidal action and periodic infusions of urban runoff, sounded the alarm in an urgent letter to volunteers. It read, in part: “Heavy winter rains were a blessing for California flowers, but the nonnative weeds loved them too! Help us pull them out of Ballona before they seed and spread.”On Monday, Patrick Tyrell, chief botanist for the preserve, took stock of the challenge.“State permit requirements prohibit the use of mechanical tools for weed control here,” he said. “So our crews will be pulling weeds by hand until the El Segundo blues return to the buckwheat for nectar in June.”Sandra DeSimone, a plant ecologist and director of research and education at Orange County’s Audubon Starr Ranch Sanctuary, a land of rugged mountains and rolling coastal bluffs, grasslands and riparian canyons, isn’t so sure that some weeds are all that bad.She has been raising eyebrows in the environmental community by promoting “hybrid ecosystems” that tolerate some nonnative grasses as a means of coping with the botanical fluctuations wrought by wetter winters, hotter summers and periods of drought due to global climate change.“Want to s... Mar 2, 2017Valentine's Day: the Super Bowl for florists in Redondo Beach
The small flower shop primarily works locally, between the beach cities and Torrance, though Silva said there was a delivery to Culver City on Valentine's Day.“We want to make sure everybody get's their flowers,” Owens said. The shop doesn't work with any wire services like Teleflora, which subcontracts with florists for deliveries. Around 35 percent of consumers buying gifts for Valentine's Day this year will purchase flowers, according to the National Retail Federation's annual survey. While candy and greeting cads are the most common gift on Valentine's Day, consumers will spend $2 billion nationally on flowers, according to the survey.“It's typically more well received when it's hand delivered,” Swisher, the sales director of Brooke's Flowers, said.Swisher, who started working in Beverly Hills, first worked with Owens in 2014 and hasn't looked back.“She's worth her weight in gold,” she said.Silva, who walked into Owens shop a month ago and asked her to teach her everything she knows, had a similar experience. Silva is new to flowers. And though Owens warned her Valentine's Day was intense, she didn't realize how crazy it could be.“Every year someone comes in at 10 o'clock and asks for more roses,” Golberendji said.Owens' 18-year-old daughter has grown up in flower shops. Mother's Day is pretty busy, but nothing like Valentine's Day.“Valentine's Day, people buy flowers for all the women in their lives,” she said.Silva, along with Owens worked until about 1 a.m. Monday before getting just a couple of hours of shut-eye to be back by 3 a.m.“We're kind of running on adrenaline,” Silva said. They anticipate tonight will be much of the same. Owens had a goal to get every set of flowers delivered by 7, but said she anticipates it'll be more like 9 p.m. She anticipates the group will go home by midnight. So to Rosie, Selby, Brittany, Heidi, Whitney and Heather: not to fear. Your flowers are coming, and a happy Valentine's Day to you. (Beach Reporter)
Sep 7, 2016Historical Society Celebrates Culver City Flower Shop Family
August 25, 2016
As part of its mission to highlight the city's history and civic accomplishments, the Culver City Historical Society recently dedicated an evening to the Tinger-Eskridge family.
Earl and Virgie (Tinger) Eskridge's family have owned a series of flower shops in Culver City dating back to 1934. Culver City Flower Shop, at 10801 Washington Blvd ., is still family-owned, and known for its custom arrangements, creative window displays and iconic neon signage.
On Wednesday, July 20 Hope Parrish, the Historical Society's Vice President of Programs, gave a presentation to a packed house at the Veterans Park Multipurpose Room. In attendance were many members of the Tinger-Eskridge family, including Mike, who continues to work with Earl at the flower shop.
Beyond flowers, the presentation highlighted the family's involvement in the formation of Culver City Little League baseball and Culver City Bank. Eventually the latter organization constructed the building at 5399 Sepulveda Blvd ., where Sepulveda meets Sawtelle, now occupied by U.S. Bank.
Earl and Virgie have given countless h... (Culver City Observer)
