Muir Ranch gives students at Muir High a chance to flourish with flowers

Baron. “I’d been offered a school site in Compton, but Pasadena has extremes of both poverty and affluence while Compton just has poverty. It didn’t seem I’d have the right resources for the kids there, and I wanted to make this the best school garden program in the country.” The idea for a campus garden was originated on a small scale in 2009 by Doss Jones, a now-retired science teacher and alum of the school. Baron notes that there were “only a couple beds of plants, struggling to survive” when he met Barrett two years later. That initial encounter came when he was hosting a regular series of giveaway events in which he would donate “a couple hundred thousand plants” to school garden programs from a demonstration farm site he supervised in San Pedro. He recalls Barrett arriving at one giveaway “with a 14-foot truck to load up,” and the two quickly struck up a friendship over the fact that Barrett’s vision of the Muir campus “extended beyond being just asphalt and concrete.” Baron and his initial group of student Ranch workers first attempted to grow and sell food crops to school cafeterias, but found that the opportunities were extremely limited by the state’s educational bureaucracy. Having long specialized in growing and selling exotic flowers in his other endeavors, he decided to switch the focus of the program with resounding success. “The focus on flowers puts us in direct engagement with caterers, weddings, and galas, makes it more appealing to the kids,” says Baron. “I pick the genetics, the variety, and the minimal growing conditions for the flowers, but the kids do really beautiful things with them, and we just sold $4,000 worth of flowers the week before Mother’s Day.” Under the $250,000 annual budget, which is raised through a combination of public and private funding including a $25,000 contribution from Miracle-Gro, the student workers earn $10.50 an hour for up to 30 hours each week, including a seven-hour Saturday shift. Once the flowers are ready to market, they are sold weekly at the South Pasadena Farmers Market as well as the Saturday morning farmers’ market at Pasadena’s Victory Park, with proceeds channeled back into the program. The Ranch also has a growing base of “subscription” customers who purchase fresh flowers weekly for their homes and businesses, including Jones Coffee and AltaEats in Pasadena. Transitions announces first winner of '12 Days of Christmas' event

Listeners can tune in at WTRO 101.7/FM or 1450 AM radio stations at 9 a.m. each day from now until Dec. 24 for winner announcements. Sunday's event will go from noon-5 p.m. Volunteers will plant 16,000 tulip and daffodil bulbs at the Campbell Station Road I-40 Exit. Volunteers over the age of 12 can participate. Jalen Ramsey is that playmaker. The 6-1 1/4 junior is one of the most complete defensive back prospects in quite some time. He can shadow bigger wide receivers as a cornerback, he can play deep as a free safety, or he can line up in the box in run defense. He has excellent ball skills and awareness in pass defense and shows strength and instincts in the run game. He can immediately slide in at safety for the Chargers, or he can move up to cornerback and form a potent cornerback corps with 2014 first-rounder Jason Verrett, Brandon Flowers and Hayward. The Chargers also could bolster the trenches here with an offensive or defensive lineman. You can draft a good running back later, or sign an undrafted free agent!" Yes, running back gems can be had late in the draft (Ahmad Bradshaw) or as UDFAs (Arian Foster), and high picks indeed can bust (Trent Richardson). But the same thing can be said for every other position as well. And when it comes to finding the right prospects, running backs are just like every other position -- the more strengths (and the fewer weaknesses) a player has, the better likelihood they have of being drafted higher. That's the case with Ohio State's Ezekiel Elliott. The junior is a complete back with the power to grind out tough yards, the speed to break long runs, the hands to catch passes out of the backfield and the balance to help in pass protection. He's a high-floor prospect who can start Week 1 and be a true three-down back. And with all the talk of preparing for life after Tony Romo, imagine the Cowboys transitioning to a power run offense, with Elliott behind the same offensive line that helped DeMarco Murray run for 1,845 yards in 2014.
