Playhouse no longer Cloverdale's best-kept secret

Word has spread quickly over the last four years, and people from neighboring states are now flocking to see riveting performances put on by exceptional acting ensembles in the little community theater that could. Artistic director Greg Thornton and managing director Emily Flowers are thrilled about the Playhouse’s success and are ready to debut next year’s schedule. 2016 will mark its fifth season, and audience members can expect a wide variety of plays that Thornton and Flowers hope will resonate with people throughout the community and elsewhere. “In many ways, this is a much more contemporary season,” Thornton said. “We strive to find a diverse group of plays that draw on diverse groups of audiences. Trying to find a roster that speaks to all the different communities is a huge yet exciting challenge, but we have great roles, great language, great characters, and fabulous stories.” F... A team-by-team look at the 2015 Classic

Lakers even finished third in the 2009 Classic. With new blood on the sideline and floor continue that tradition? Cloverdale — Showcase for Cooper Neese Cloverdale’s Cooper Neese is probably the highest-profile player in the Classic this season. The Butler-bound Neese might have disappointed local Indiana State fans by choosing to play for the Bulldogs, but that won’t diminish his potential impact on the Classic and the Clovers’ chances. A career 1,000-point scorer, Neese, a junior, can do everything on the court and keeps his teammates involved. Sophomore guard Jalen Moore joins Neese as a scoring threat. If there’s something to watch out for when it comes to the 7-3 Clovers, it might be foul trouble. The Clovers don’t utilize a deep bench and it could catch them out if the fouls start to pile up. Nonetheless, Cloverdale comes to Terre Haute with hopes to join in the growing tradition of small schools that make a Classic run. Marshall — A chance to re-cast its season It would be disingenuous to ignore the fact that Marshall has had a turbulent off-season and start to its regular season.  An October coaching change that saw long-time and successful boss Tom Brannan ousted surprised — no, shocked — those outside of Marshall, Ill., one that remains an open-wound. Then there was the abhorrent animal cruelty case that led to felony charges and suspensions of three Marshall players that have since been served. Tumult around the Lions is in sharp contrast to the usual calm they enter the Classic with, but that doesn’t mean they’re suddenly an easy mark. It hasn’t been easy for new coach Tim Pearison or his players, but Marshall enters the Classic with a 6-2 record and a team that’s as dangerous as ever. In fact, had none of the above occurrences happened, Marshall would be tabbed to be a potential team to come out of this side of the bracket. Josiah Wallace, Chazz Lindsey and Spencer Shaffner are all proven players. The Lions are not to be overlooked. Edgewood — New kids on the block Several schools have come-and-gone from the Classic since 2000 and there’s no strict pattern as to how first-year teams have fared. Owen Valley and Robinson finished second in their debuts in 2005 and 2012 respectively. Linton, Casey and Shakamak went three-and-out in their debuts (or in Shakamak’s case, re-entry in 2008). Edgewood enters the fray with the help of former Rockville coach Dave Mahurin to help them navigate the Classic’s waters. Mahurin won the Classic with Rockville in 2012 The Mustangs are 5-3 entering the tournament, but have no bad losses (combined record 17-6), and quality wins over Cloverdale and Sulliva...
