Will there be a dazzling 'super bloom' of flowers in California this year? - USA TODAY

California desert, the first place that blooms big is the south-facing Edom Hill, near the intersection of Date Palm Drive and Varner Road in Cathedral City, Cornett says. There, he says, floral fans will find desert sunflowers, sand verbena and Arizona lupine.Another place to spot early blooms is along Interstate 10 throughout the Coachella Valley, he says. To prevent rubber-necking for flowers, however, Cornett offers a detour: From Cathedral City, travel north on Date Palm toward the highway and then turn right on Varner and go toward Thousand Palms. If you’re feeling adventurousOswit Canyon, located near the intersection of Bogart Trail and South Palm Canyon in Palm Springs, also blooms early, Cornett said. He says he has already spotted some flowers there — including wild heliotrope, chuparosa and brown-eyed primrose — but says it’s far from reaching its peak.He also expects that flowers will be blooming soon along Box Canyon Road, about three miles east of Mecca.Barrows, meanwhile, recommended checking out early-blooming flowers near the south entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.If you’re planning aheadMission Springs Canyon, located off Highway 62 and Mission Creek Road should begin blooming in the next couple of weeks, Cornett said. The canyon is about 1,000 miles above the desert floor, he says, so it typically reaches peak bloom in late March or early April.Rebecca Plevin is a reporter for The Desert Sun. Annual flower drop provides local Gold Star families support

Allison Sun told KESQ News Channel 3's and CBS Local 2's Katie Widner.Sun's older brother, Army Private First Class Ming Sun, was a native of Cathedral City and died by enemy fire during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007.Newly appointed Supervisor Manuel Perez and keynote speaker, Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz, were also in attendance."God Bless our men and women serving in uniform and God bless the United States of America," said Ruiz to applause.Ruiz presented the Congressional Gold Medal to a representative of the family of a World War II Doolittle Raider, 2nd Lt. Aden Earl Jones. Jones was a bombardier on the third B-25 to take off from the USS Hornet Air Carrier during the Doolittle Raid. The family then donated the medal to the museum. The outpouring of gratitude and support, clearly meaningful in many ways."It's very heartwarming to families who lost their loved ones. It's definitely like added support," Ming said. The event also included live music, food and drinks, and a number of vintage airplanes and military memorabilia on display. (KESQ - KESQ)

Endangered flower species is first to bloom

Plants are particularly common this year around the northern margins of Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Rancho Mirage, often near road shoulders where water collects after storms. All specimens are fully protected so watch where you place your feet and walk carefully around individual plants. The plants rarely exceed 18 inches in height so it is best to take photographs from prone position. Jess Rosenberg leads a "nature walk" at the Coachella Valley Wildflower fest... (The Desert Sun)

Win sends Rattlers to tournament final in MaxPreps tourney

Rob Hanmer's best. He had a team start 25-0, and another that won a California Interscholastic Federation championship, while he coached at Cathedral City High School. But the fact that Hanmer's squad at Rancho Mirage High is still unbeaten at this point in the season may be a sign that this group could eventually be mentioned in the same high esteem as the other two that Hanmer once coached. It also speaks volumes about the program he's building in just the second year the varsity program has been in existence. "We set goals at the beginning of the season to play hard every night, to do things the right way," Hanmer said, "and we've done that 12 times in a row. So that means something to us." The 12th time came Tuesday in an runaway 82-56 win against Del Sol of Las Vegas in the annual MaxPrep Holiday Classic, which has been hosted by Rancho Mirage High School for the third year in a row.
