Flower-covered Floats Blossom at the Annual Rose Parade - HowStuffWorks

Parade, the marching bands and horses are also perennial favorites. The marching bands have been part of the tradition since 1891 when the Monrovia, California City Band provided music in the second Rose Parade. Ever since, thousands of high school, college, university and military bands have made the march. And speaking of marching, the equestrian teams will be doing a lot of that, as well. These horse and rider units first became part of the parade in January 1890, when then-Grand Marshal Francis Rowland and President Charles Holder rode their horses to lead the first parade through Pasadena. Each year since, the parade has included a variety of horse breeds, including Curlies, American Saddlebreds, Gypsy Cobs, Andalusians, miniature horses, draft horses and more. Crowd Favorites for 2020 The California Polytechnic State University's float — a joint entry by both Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo universities — has been a crowd favorite for 70-plus years. Designed and built entirely by students, the Cal Poly floats have led in introducing technology to the parade throughout the decades, from the first use of hydraulics for animation in 1968 to the first color-changing floral effect in 2017. A helicopter landed in a California poppy field during the super bloom, and officials are furious - The Washington Post

Lake Elsinore, Calif., an hour southeast of Los Angeles, after they were thronged with “Disneyland-sized crowds.” [‘Poppy Apocalypse’: Small California city overrun by thousands of tourists declares ‘public safety crisis’] “This is unlike anything we’ve ever seen,” the city’s mayor wrote in a post titled “POPPY PROBLEMS.” “We’re shorthanded. ... One of our employees was hit and run by a driver. A rattlesnake bit a visitor. Residents have been screaming at the people directing traffic.” Park officials in Antelope Valley did not respond to a request for comment. They note on their website that the poppies open in the morning and curl up in the afternoon. “Please remember, visitors must stay on OFFICIAL TRAILS only,” they write. “Photos in the flowers are not allowed in the park. Walking in the poppies creates dirt patches and may result in a ticket. DO NOT walk where others have already damaged the habitat; it will compound the damage and leave a scar for years to come.” Allyson Chiu contributed to this report. Family day trips from Los Angeles

The next time you and your family visit Los Angeles, save time for some fun, easy day trips out of town. One place I love to visit is Solvang, the California city just 30 miles north of Santa Barbara that’s overflowing with historic Danish heritage and influences. But let us dispel images of windmills and aebleskiver, also known as pancake puffs. From wine tasting and tours to horse-drawn trolley rides and endless boutique shopping, from bike rides and country road cycling to riding a Segway, and strolls through the twisting walkways of the village, there are attractions galore and endless things to do with family, kids and friends. You can enjoy fun times outdoors in peaceful, beautiful and relaxing locales. In Solvang one can enjoy the fresh bounty of the Santa Ynez Valley – ideal for food and wine lovers alike. Featuring something for everyone – from farm-to-table, rustic Italian cuisine; New American and modern Danish fare; sweets in all forms; to award-winning beers, spirits and world-class wines, Solvang has it all. On our recent getaway there, we made our headquarters at the charming Mirabelle Inn, an elegant family-owned ... (El Paso Inc.)

Born in Tehran, Iran, Ghaffarian was raised in the Northern California city of Los Altos after immigrating with her family as a child following the 1979 Iranian revolution. In her twenties, she started her business, Flower Affairs, in her parents' garage. She has more than a quarter-century of experience envisioning, planning and executing large-scale events, the White House said. Ghaffarian, 46, trained with florists based in the United Kingdom and her work has been featured by several publications, including The Knot, Ceremony and Today's Bride. Ghaffarian said she is "humbled" by the opportunity to serve and "will dedicate myself to advancing the tradition of excellent and elegance in the White House." Advertisement She will be "on hand" for next week's state dinner and will join the White House full time in mid-October after completing a move to Washington.
