Bay Area Small Business Spotlight: Floral Images San Francisco

Kelly Johnson crossed the threshold of my Benicia client’s boutique with two bright items: A glowing smile and a glass vase filled with beautiful pink and orange lilies. She put the arrangement on the counter alongside her pamphlet and said, “Enjoy these for the week, I’ll be back to see what you think. Have a great day!” I was intrigued. Having come from a sales background myself, I am always curious to see what new ways businesses market their wares. After a little while investigating online and perusing the colorful print materials she left behind, my client and I looked more closely at the flowers, and to take a whiff… We were stunned to see that they were actually NOT fresh cut flowers as we had first assumed, but rather stunningly crafted imposters!I immediately called Kelly Johnson of Floral Image San Francisco to inquire further about their unique business model and product offering. Tonie Cooper of Benicia said she took a break from her job in Vallejo to visit the store recently to find something to protect her cell phone from breaking when she periodically drops it. “This is a cute store,” she said. “My boss suggested I check it out because I was online looking for a new phone case.” “So far, she has everything I’ve asked for,” Cooper added. “The store’s well organized and she’s very helpful.” Other items the store carries include selfie sticks in fashion colors, touch pens, screen protectors, ring holders and indoor and car chargers. There are wireless speakers, travel adaptors and smart watches that can be used as a phone and a camera. “There are a lot of really cool new things you can do with the new technologies,” she said. Besides the sale of cell phone accessories, Lopez also does cell phone repairs and soon will be selling pre-paid cell phones and sim cards. She offers international recharging services and international calling cards. She can also accept most cell phone plan payments, as well as payments for PG&E. The store is a Western Union and UPS access point. Benicia woman Kate Gibbs keeps city fragrant with local flower service

Benicia >> Kate Gibbs doesn’t mind having to wake up before the sun is out sometimes to buy flowers, or even using her lunch hour to make someone else happy. “I really don’t mind,” said Gibbs, 44. “It’s kind of fun.” The Benicia resident owns Smitten Flowers, a small, one-woman florist that operates out of Gibbs’ garage. She manages the business while being a full-time single mom of two daughters and the City of Benicia’s deputy city clerk. “It’s helpful that we get an hour for lunch (to make deliveries), and Smitten is separate from my job at the city,” Gibbs said. “I just need to be on top of it, staying organized.” While Gibbs always had wanted to own a business in her hometown, her passion for flower arrangement did not come until much later in life. “I just always loved our downtown,” she said. “And I had always wanted to own a store on First Street since right after college.” Though not located in downtown, Gibbs created Smitten Flowers two years ago to combine her love of... The stars were the Italian food, Italian wine, Italian sodas, and Commedia Del’Arte, a classic Italian theater form, music and attire. “There is nothing more beautiful than the Italian fashions of the Renaissance period,” Drew said. “We’re trying to do something that’s different. Fantastico means ‘crazy and great,’ and that’s what this is going to be,” she added. Highlights included Gruppo Sbandieratori Sansepolcro, the Italian Flag throwers direct from Italy, Girl Glass, hand blown glass demonstrations by Shannon Jane Morgan from Sacramento, and comedy cooking show, Cucina Dell Arte, written by Vallejo performer and artist Boudicca Todi, who provided recipes adapted from her own family recipes from Rome. “Our reasoning for doing an Italian Renaissance was to do something a little different from the standard English Renaissance,” Vidor said. “Italy is where the Renaissance began. Women were educated and often served as the accountants of their households. These progressive philosophies spread through out Europe and ended the Medieval period. On top of this, the clothing at the time are some of the most beautifully crafted, with vibrate colors and fabrics, a feast for the eyes.” The event’s encore is already in the books for May return, said Vidor. • 4). I’m a different person than I was at 15.” Wilson said she’ll continue to strive to become the best she can, be it singing or playing the four instruments she plays. “I’m motivated to really work hard and do what I’m supposed to be doing,” Wilson said. “All these great things are coming up. I’m writing a lot more. I already write a lot. Now I’m writing for other people. Consumer Music relocates Consumer Music’s new location at 1017 Tennessee St. is just up the street, but a world away from its former site of 26 years, owner Brad Sears said. The move to the former Youth and Family Services building near the corner of Monterey Street, which Sears now owns, allowed him and his store manager, Shaana Keller, to quadruple the company’s music academy space.“The larger square footage is much better for the customers, the teachers, the students and the parents,” Sears said. The new space also features a unique, permanent hanging display of musical instruments-turned object d’art created by 20 local artists, Sears and Keller said. The installation creates something of a New Orleans, Bourbon Street type-of atmosphere with its be-petaled horns spewing flowers or butterflies, multi-colored stringed instruments and other musical devices-related artwork, dangling from the high, black ceiling and perched on elevated shelves. “I wondered what I was going to do with these high ceilings and then it hit me,” Sears said. “I had all the old instruments waiting for a rainy day, and this was it.” Consumer Music was founded in 1984 in Concord, where Sears still lives so he can care for his mother, but he expanded to Vallejo in 1990.
