Here's how to create an edible garden

Q: I would like to change my front yard to an edible garden. What can be done now?Francine, Atascadero A: This is a good time to get your front yard prepared for planting spring edibles. To start, turn off all the irrigation lines at the water source. Next, remove the drip tubing, soaker hoses, etc. Now you can dig out all the scrubs and plants without damaging irrigation lines that you might want to re-install.Once all the plants are removed, take a soil sample and send it to a lab for an analytical soil test. The results generally come with recommendations on how to improve your soil fertility. Take the soil printout to a trusted nursery or agriculture retail supplier and stock up on soil amendments. Unless you already have a high percentage of organic matter (see test results), add some quality and well-cured compost to your soil. Incorporate amendments into the compost. In general, you will add small quantities of micro and macro minerals that are lacking in your soil. Spread a 4-to-6-inch layer of compost plus minerals onto the top soil. Dorothy Cleota Scamara

Dorothy Scamara, 87, of Atascadero, passed into the arms of her beloved Savior on Sunday, March 13, 2016.She was born March 1, 1929, in Seminole, Okla.Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin of 65 years.She is survived by her four children, Larry Scamara and wife Carol of Sonora, Delinda Redding and husband Wes of Atascadero, Clifford Scamara of Brea, and Sharon Heuton and husband Mike of Sonora, six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.Dorothy loved her family with her whole heart and was known for being a praying mom. She raised her children to passionately love and serve the Lord. All four of them are involved in ministry today, changing their world for Jesus. Dorothy was devoted to serving her Lord with her whole being. She and her husband Alvin directed the Atascadero Food Pantry for many years and loved feeding the poor, not only physically, but more importantly providing spiritual food that changes lives forever. Eileen Marie Allan

Eileen Marie Allan of Atascadero passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, in Taft, while visiting family.She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Lon Allan of Atascadero, her three children: Tom Mayfield and his wife Wendy of Taft, Mike Mayfield and his wife Yvette of Taft, and Shannon Cheatley and her husband Jim of San Clemente; her two step daughters: Janet Smith and her husband Mark of Santa Clarita, and Ginger Nicholas and her husband Randy of Tehachapi; six siblings: Gary Graupman, Sally Trudell, Lois Pruitt, Janet Graupman, Phillip Graupman, and Jim Graupman; eleven grandchildren: Charenne, Brittney, Bailee, Allison, Jared, Jason, Zach, Tyler, Joshua, Grace, and Sterling; seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.Eileen was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Nov. 25, 1944.
