Memorial Day 2017: Coming back to remember soldiers past

Shirley St. John of Pemberton slowly pulled into the Janesville Cemetery on Memorial Day, moved off the gravel path and parked on the grass. Slowly, dressed in a bright red outfit, she gingerly walked to the grave of her late father-in-law, Charles Henry St. John, a World War I veteran who died in 1954. She placed flowers near his marker, smiled, and was pleased someone was there to listen to her story."My grandmother's here, too, and I promised her I would see her," St. John noted. "She's a Randolph."St. John's quiet, solemn visit to the Janesville Cemetery was one of a slow parade of vehicles making their way to the east side of the city. Following the annual Memorial Day ceremony in Janesville, the quiet steps through the sacred grounds -- many adorned this Monday with flags, veteran markers and flowers -- became a secondary event for some.St. John's father-in-law, born in 1897, was a Minnesota Pvt. 163 Depot Brigade member.
