CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – Random Acts of Kindness Day kicked off for the first time in the city today.
According to Campbell River Community Foundation board member Mary Ashley, the aim of the day is to spread kindness throughout the city.
"Somewhere today at some point, hopefully people will consider performing a random act of kindness. It might be opening the door, it might be buying somebody flowers, it might be paying for coffee. It's any little thing," Ashley said.
Members of the Community Foundation board are out and about in the city and if residents report an act of kindness they've done, they'll receive a card that they can then pass on to someone else so the cycle continues.
"(Campbell River) is already a pretty kind community to start with...
May 24, 2018Art blooms at Painter's Lodge
Buds to Blossoms celebration.
The renowned lodge, just minutes from Campbell River, has opened the season in full bloom for the month-long art event, decorated with flowers, a colourful umbrella display in the lobby, lanterns in the dining room, and pre-lit cherry blossom trees. Under the seasonal theme A Whisper of Spring, spectacular artwork from local and BC artists is also on exhibit throughout the lodge.
"The entire lodge is being decorated in a spring floral theme – it's just a beautiful spring feeling," says Cathy Kaardal, event co-ordinator from A World About Art.
The event is one of a new series of arts programs at Painter's Lodge, a way to welcome both locals and visitors to the spectacular location, while at the same supporting the arts community, Kaardal says.
Just for Moms
Mother's Day weekend – Friday, May 11 through Sunday, May 13 – is at the heart of Buds to Blossoms.
Kaardal together with partner Charlotte Deptford has planned a special artisans' show of beautiful, handcrafted works, including pottery, jewellery and more. Among the eclectic array g...

I'D LIKE TO GIVE a heartfelt thank you to Sara Gunn, of Orpha's Prairie Baking. She came to my aid when I was injured by a falling table at the Campbell River Farmer's Market. Sara was instantly there, got me to hospital, arranged for my car to be looked after, and was attentive, reassuring and kind. I can't thank her enough for her kind generosity of spirit. Please support her in her local business.
DINING OUT in the Comox Valley is usually a terrific experience. We have more and better places to have a great meal certainly than in Nanaimo and arguably more than in many places in the lower mainland. The quality of food and servers is terrific. This evening however, I had dinner in a corporate BC restaurant - partly because it was Monday and many others are closed - and partly because I was alone and just wanted a supper where I thought I knew what I would get. The food and service were what I would expect anywhere in the province but the Comox Valley diners were the biggest group of banjo players I have ever experienced. It wasn't just the bratty kids that think everywhere is their house......it was the adults. Several very obese people bashed into my table with their enormous girths. So many large people...wow. Loudly belching young men, Ickkk. Assistance dogs that were not well trained or particularly obedient running under my table. Ewww. I don't know if the hipster restaurants in Cumberland (the actual coal mining town) are open on Mondays but their manners have gotta be better than those of the rednecks in Courtenay. Bring on the beards and t... (Comox Valley Echo)

A BOUQUET of wild flowers to the small group who remembered and to those who didn't but after reading this sadly do.
YES, THE CITY of Campbell River is still on stage 1 water restrictions, as they were during last year's drought. Similar water supply as CVRD, but they have planned for growth.
WISHING AN OCEAN OF ROSES to Lisa at the Blackfin Pub for making my Daughter and Son-in-law's 10th Anniversary a night to remember. Along with Lisa's wonderful spirit, she made sure we had the best evening possible. The food was second to none and the service was impeccable. You made us feel like family and we can't thank you enough. Cheers Lisa, to you and your wonderful staff.
FIRST, A BIG warm-hearted thank you bouquet to the Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa for combining employee recognition and support for local non-profits through their Starfish Awards Program. Secondly, a high-five thanks to Kingfisher's Maintenance Guru, Dale Wright for choosing Comox Valley Food Bank as his "Starfish Donation Destination". The Gift Certificate for a 2-night stay in the Kingfisher's Romance Suite (value $599) will be one sweet prize in a raffle the Food Bank will organize this fall.
TO THE ELDERLY, but small-minded, pedestrian I almost ran over when you were about to change direction without looking to suddenly dash across the street in front of my car without following the Sunday Night Tijuana Tribute Concert at Simms Park: you can thank your lucky stars that I won't be buying a bouquet of roses for your funeral because of my quick reaction on the horn (and not a Tijuana one)! What was the reason for the middle finger that you raised at me? If it was to indicate that you are number one, I agree with you - number one in pedestrian stupidity and failure to take ownership for your irresponsible actions, that is! Too bad you don't remember that little pedestrian safety guideline that you were likely taught as a small boy: "Stop, look, and listen before you cross the street."
WELL, THERE"S BEEN lots of interest in "paid parking" at the new hospital and I'm surprised no-one has addressed the fact that Robbins Parking benefits more than any other group. They take the 'lions share' of the revenue, not the hospital. This money flows out of our community to t... (Comox Valley Echo)
