Apr 22, 2016Colours come out at Abbotsford Tulip Festival
Abbotsford Tulip Festival owner Alexis Warmerdam says this week's weather has brought more flowers into bloom.

This week’s warm weather has arrived just in time for the organizers of the inaugural Abbotsford Tulip Festival.
Located on North Parallel Road just east of the Whatcom Road exit, the festival’s long-planned opening day arrived last weekend, before many of the 10 acres of tulips had bloomed.
But sunny weather and temperatures that neared 20 C prompted several varieties to bloom early in the week. Although there is still lots of green, by Thursday rows of yellow, orange, and multicoloured flowers were in bloom, while purple petals slowly pushed forth into the sun. By Thursday, about five per cent of the field was in bloom, with more flowers expected to open by the weekend, organizer Alexis Warmerdam says.
Of course, that is all weather-dependent.
“Unfortunately, Mother Nature is out of our control,” she said.

Apr 22, 20162.5 million bulbs in full bloom at Abbotsford Tulip Festival (PHOTOS)
Standing in the middle of this vast field will remind you of a scene from The Wizard of Oz; everywhere you turn at the first annual Abbotsford Tulip Festival, densely packed multicoloured tulip bulbs are in full bloom.
The 10-acre (435,600-square-foot) attraction is backdropped by the Fraser Valley’s mountains to the north, east, and south, including the snowcapped peaks of Mount Baker if the weather conditions are fair.
Approximately 2.5 million bulbs of 50 varieties are showcased at the field just off the Trans-Canada Highway about a 90 minute drive from downtown Vancouver.
The tradition of growing flowers at the site began in 1950 when Peter Wamerdam, an immigrant to Canada from the Netherlands, celebrated his Dutch heritage by practicing his horticultural and farming knowledge. This year’s inaugural Tulip Festival on the site was introduced by his granddaughter, Alexis.
Visitors at the festival can stroll through the field and along its perimeters. There is also a covered picnic area, family-friendly activities such as a hay bale playground and duck races, and a ‘U-Pick’ area where visitors can handpick their o... (Vancity Buzz)
Apr 22, 2016Photos: First annual Abbotsford Tulip Festival features 10 acres of blooming bulbs
Even if you squint your eyes, you won’t be able to see the last row of the blooming buds at the first annual Abbotsford Tulip Festival.
2.5 million colourful bulbs cover 10 acres (435,600-square-foot) of farm land at the only tulip festival located in B.C. this year.
Expect to bask in rows and rows of pink, yellow, red, purple, and multi-coloured tulips at this family-owned attraction.
The Warmerdam family has been growing flowers on Sumas Prairie for over 30 years. This year’s tulip festival was created by Alexis Warmerdam, owner and fourth generation Dutch-Canadian bulb grower.
Besides gazing at the myriad amounts of beautiful tulips and wandering through the fields, visitors can also pick their own flowers in a U-Pick field, take photos with cut-out boards, or have a snack in the covered picnic area. Food trucks only come on the weekends.
There’s also a children’s play area, so this weekend trip—a 90-minute drive from Downtown Vancouver—is suitable for the entire brood.

Apr 1, 2016Abbotsford Tulip Festival delayed by cool weather
Organizers of the inaugural Abbotsford Tulip Festival are warning the public that even though they're technically open, their fields of tulips have yet to bloom.
"Unfortunately they're not going to bloom for another seven to 10 days," said owner Alexis Warmerdam.
"We had said we would open on March 25, so we did, and we're just trying to make the best of it."
?Despite above average daytime temperatures across the Lower Mainland for the past several weeks, the fourth-generation bulb grower said the weather hasn't been favourable for tulips.
"In February we were having double-digit evening temperatures, and then when those two wind storms came through, they dropped down to two or three degrees and that slowed everything down."
The young farmer, with a team of approximately 15 people, planted 2.5 million bulbs all in one day on the 4-hectare-field last October, in preparation for the big event.
