Phipps' Spring Flower Show brings art to life

Ulmer, of Uniontown, says it's fitting that visitors begin their tour at the welcome center, where “Flowers” (1964), a familiar painting by Pittsburgh artist Andy Warhol, will greet them. A green wall planted with kalanchoe, a tropical succulent, and liriope, a groundcover, represents the painting. Then it's on to the Palm Court, where they must pass through an oversized picture frame to enter and find Edmund Leighton's painting “Lady in a Garden” (date unknown). Melino says the focal point of the impressionist painter's work and the room is a woman in a long, white dress. “We started making a dress form into a topiary frame,” she says. “The top of her dress was planted in succulents and the bottom is made of cascading white orchids.” Plantings include pink and red snapdragons. For Ulmer, the Palm Court was the most challenging of her room assignments. The large space made it difficult to depict the English garden in summer featured in the painting, and various seasonal flowers in matching shades had to substitute for summer varieties. The East Room was easier, she says, because hundreds of orange, red, yellow and white tulips were readily available for the landscape, Monet's “A Field of Tulips in Holland” (1886), which also includes a windmill, as does the room. The South Conservatory, with its Japanese foot bridge over a pond and water lilies, azaleas, grasses and flowering bulbs, corresponds with Monet's famous oil painting, “The Japanese Footbridge and the Water Lily Pool” (1899). In the Victoria Room, a rowboat is docked in an existing pool for “The Boating Party” (1893-93) by Mary Cassatt, a second Pittsburgh artist featured in the show. Representing the blue sea in the painting are scilla, muscari and hyacinths. One room that is generating enthusiasm from design team members is the Serpentine Room; Melino says its curves and undulations made it a good choice to represent van Gogh's 1889 oil on canvas “Starry Night.” Swirls of forget-me-nots, delphiniums and primula are used to re-create the blue sky in the painting. “The most exciting thing about (designer Phil Cole's) interpretation is that when van Gogh designed his painting, he was in an insane asylum. It's interesting how the painting was conceptualized,” Ulmer says.
