Jul 6, 2021Moon flowers, a romantic Ocean Beach garden, the Monterey cypress - San Diego Reader
By Abe Opincar, July 17, 1997 Read full article
Sin Jen recalls a disaster that struck San Diego before the war: When the water from Hoover Dam was first used in California, it was too salty and killed all the begonias and acid-loving plants.

Get That Gorgeous Girl Out of That Rock
Sin has hundreds of gardens all over the county, many in Point Loma and Rancho Santa Fe.. I have talked with a few of these lucky people. They regard Sin with affectionate wonder and tell stories about his skill and the strength of his vision — tales of plant identification, coaxing branches down to the ground, daredevil pruning. In a garden in Point Loma, he grafted a red leaf plum onto an apricot because he wanted the color.

The Monterey cypress is one of the worst trees for Southern California.
Pull It Up by the Roots Before You Fall in Love With It
About 40 years ago, shortly after Lou and I built our home and every penny counted, I climbed to the top of a large Monterey cypress tree outside our bedroom and cut off its totally dead top section. The dead portion was over ten feet tall. My mother-in-law, Frances Lloyd Wright, glanced out of her living room window, saw me astride a branch on top of the tree, and had a fit.

Jun 19, 2020Village Flower Basket program still in bloom - Pamplin Media Group
Victoria, Canada with his wife Barbara, when they saw the hanging floral baskets, his daughter Beth Oliphant Hoover said. Doug was inspired and wanted to spread the beauty throughout Lake Oswego. Oliphant Hoover runs the Oliphant Hoover Community Charity, a nonprofit organization that was created in honor of Doug and gives back to local charities by means of a large golf tournament held every year. This year it was suspended due to COVID-19, though there will still be a raffle. This year, the nonprofit and the Oliphant Hoover families are donating $2,500 to the basket program, though Oliphant Hoover said the donations might exceed $3,000 since an email blast was sent to golf participants, sponsors and donors. Responses and donations were immediate, Oliphant Hoover said. "It was a unanimous vote to participate in a new fresh charity this year, an additional charity, and that charity is the village basket program," said Oliphant Hoover, adding that nonprofit's mission is to be a blessing to the community, and an inspiration to others to be intentional and purpose-driven like her dad was. "We love volunteering and we love just bringing people along (as) servant leaders to just do wonderful things to bless others."
The flower basket program is supported by volunteer donations which go toward the cost of the baskets, daily watering, fertilizing and recycling the baskets at the end of the season. The cost of the program averages more than $70,000, with each basket costing about $350. Fowler said the goal is to collect another $20,000 and keep the baskets up until Labor Day. People can make a tax-deductible donation online, by phone at 503-636-3634, or send a check to the Lake Oswego Chamber Foundation, PO Box 368, Lake Oswego, OR 97034. "Sometimes what people don't hear about the hanging baskets is we get a ton of comments about the baskets as we water and maintain them and the baskets — I have come to the conclusion — give people hope," said Karsseboom, adding that one year as he was watering the baskets, a woman drove up and said she was at a low point, contemplating suicide. But as she watched the truck go by, watering the baskets, she knew everything would be OK and she should keep going. "That gives us purpose in our work," Karsseboom said.

Aug 29, 2016Stark couple lives dream of owning a flower farm
The couple met briefly at Hoover High School when she was a freshman and he a senior. However, it wasn't until after they were out on their own that they met up again — this time at the Hartville Flea Market. Their courtship was quick and a year later they married. In the early stages of their relationship, they started talking about their future and found out they shared a dream of farming.
It took some planning, but within a year, the Allens have started merchandising their organically grown sunflowers at area Fishers Foods and Earth Fare stores. By next year, they are planning to sell fresh bouquets with seasonal flowers March through December. They also have a farm stand opened most Saturdays. A hoop house, which is similar to a greenhouse but is made of metal, plastic pipe or wood, and covered with a layer of heavy plastic, will help extend their growing season as long as possible. It is heated by the sun and cooled by the wind.
A family affair, Judd is in charge of the day-to-day operations and Shannon is in charge of marketing.
A little background
"We grew up in North Canton," said Shannon. "When I was growing up, we always had chickens. My mom always had tons of flowers. Judd's dad was a horticulture teacher at Jackson High School for 37 years ... so we were kind of prepared for this."
"Not everyone has the dream of having a mini farm someday, but we did," she said, noting they have been together seven years. Now, they have three future farm hands as well. Maxwell, 3, and Mae, 2, and Madeline, now 1.
They sold their house before finding a new place with enough land to start their farm. So they moved into his parents house until they found... (Canton Repository)
