Feb 23, 2017Top Ten Spots to Celebrate National Margarita Day
A better-end tequila is imperative when you’re working with a cocktail of such simplicity,” says Alma’s bar manager Alex Higdon. “Classic cocktails like margaritas have become so famous over the years that big corporations have kind of bastardized them. They’ve lost those quality ingredients that initially made them famous.”
In addition to the use of fresh ingredients, Higdon attributes the uniqueness of Alma’s margarita to its rim—a half-and-half dusting of salt and chipotle sodium seasoning.
“It gives it a nice spicy flavor that isn’t overwhelming,” he says. “That blended with the tequila and the tartness of the agave plant and lime juice turns it into something really beautiful.”
In celebration of the national holiday, spice up your average hump-day happy hour by heading to any one of these local watering holes.

Feb 3, 2016Big jump seen in multi-family homes locally
New construction is also slated to continue at Greenway Village, an existing apartment complex near Stuart Nelson Park.
Philip Higdon, Greenway Village president and vice president of Higdon Development, echoed Ervin's views that new multi-family construction responds to a local market need.
"There hadn't been an apartment complex built in the city limits of Paducah since the '90s," Higdon said, adding that a market analysis his company conducted confirmed that belief.
Greenway Village, built on 20 acres, currently has 100 apartments built and rented. Construction is under way on 36 more units. When completed, Greenway Village will have 200 rental apartments and 80 condos for ownership. A swimming pool and clubhouse are also under construction, he said.
The Greenway Village name speaks to one of the philosophies behind the development, Higdon said.
"The intent was to have a little self-contained village like you would see in Florida," he said. "â ¦ That's the community aspect we're trying to create at Greenway Village."
He said he believes the trend of more people wanting to rent rather than own homes, which started to emerge in the wake of the 2008 housing and financial crisis, is likely to continue.
"Nationally there has been a huge shift from home ownership to being more flexible and more mobile and everything," he said. "â ¦ People are really looking at renting differently."
