Article content continuedKarlee Smith, along with her mother-in-law, Sandra Lavorato Hipkin, opened Country in Bloom in Sherwood Park in mid-November. With competitive prices, the floral side of things offers a more natural, farmhouse design behind its arrangements. So far, the shop is thriving on seasonal flower demand and is living up to its rustic charm.“In hindsight, this was a great time to do this because the support local movement is massive and we felt like Sherwood Park didn’t have a store like us. We’re trying to be a little bit different and so far, it’s been really successful. Even though there is a pandemic, all of these restrictions, and all of these hurdles that we’ve had to overcome, it’s been really good,” noted Smith.New floral and decor shop, Country in Bloom in the Park offers a more natural, farmhouse design behind its arrangements. Nov 9, 2019Local flower shop to spread joy to seniors with random acts of kindness - Sherwood Park News
Shigehiro, who co-owns Shig’s Flowers with his wife Sue.The goal is to raise enough to donate a bouquet to every senior at the Cloverbar Lodge in Sherwood Park. The flower shop shared the plan on social media and it received some good buzz but they still have a little way to go to their goal before the cut-off on Wednesday. The flower shop got the idea because it was such a long, cold winter and many seniors have been held up in their homes. Shigehiro said they realized they could brighten up a senior’s day by simply delivering some flowers and showing them they matter.“Seniors are very important to our community,” explained Shigehiro. “We do deliveries to seniors complexes and when we go in it almost breaks your heart because as you’re walking in, you pass several seniors who ask if it is for them.”This initiative allows those seniors who may not get flowers or visitors to have a little joy in their life and something beautiful to look at.“They will be assorted flower arrangements and we want them to be long-lasting,” explained Shigehiro. “We also want to make sure they are bright and cheery too so it will make their day.”The donations from the community will allow Shig’s Flowers to put a bouquet in the hands of every senior at the complex and Shigehiro said they are very grateful to those donating because it will brighten up a senior’s day.“I believe it will be fantastic,” explained Shigehiro. “From the experience that we have from delivering to seniors homes, they are very happy when they get them and this time they will all get them so it will be fantastic.”The shop owner added they are still a little ways away from their goal and hopes they can reach it so they don’t leave anyone out.If successful, the event could be turned into an annual occurrence. If you want to donate, drop by Shig’s Flowers at 945 Ordze Road or call 780-464-5465.tdosser@postmedia.comtwitter.com/travisdosse

“The goal of the program is to cultivate a stronger community. Neighbours nominate other neighbours when they recognize their efforts in their yard. It’s a good tool to get neighbours talking and appreciating one another,” explained Beth Hunt, chairperson and front yard recognition coordinator with Strathcona in Bloom. “It’s not about how much money is spent or how big the property is, it’s just about neighbours recognizing that someone has put in that effort to bring life to their community and their yard inspires a nomination.”Nominations for the front yard recognition program are reviewed by a panel of community judges. Five yards are selected to the winner’s circle and those winners are awarded a prize and recognition for their efforts. The winners receive a small award but every yard nominated helps the community as a whole to become a more aesthetically dive...
