Flowers continues to bloom for Patriots
The latest example being the Patriots’ 31-17 win over Green Bay at Gillette Stadium this past Sunday night when Flowers, who moved around in the defensive line, showed he’s not just living on the edge.Flowers was credited with five tackles, one quarterback hit and half-a-sack (combining with Adrian Clayborn to get to Aaron Rodgers) in the game the numbers actually not doing justice to the havoc he wreaked with the Packers’ offensive line.“He’s just got a good feel for the game,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said. “He kind of knows how to play.“He’s a very instinctive guy, has a lot of versatility, really can play anywhere across the line. He’s played every spot for us. He’s played on the center, he’s played on the guard, he’s played on the tackle, he’s played out there on the tight end, he’s played on his feet, he’s played down. He’s played everywhere but off the ball.”McCourty, for one has noticed.“Really good player,” said McCourty. “I think it’s very noticeable when he’s not out there for us. I think his energy … He’s one of the guys that is a technician in everything he does, whether that’s in the run game, in the pass game. He’s versatile in that he can play inside for us, he can play outside, he can stand up on the edge and cover at times.”Heading into Sunday’s game with the Titans in Tennessee, Flowers has been credited with 32 tackles, 2-1/2 sacks, eight quarterback hits and two passes defensed in the eight games he’s played (he missed the Patriots ... Wednesday's Patriots notebook: Flowers drawing praise
SHAQ MASON returned to practice on Wednesday after missing last weekend’s game against the Green Bay Packers because of a calf injury. He was limited with the same injury on Wednesday, but his presence was a good sign.
Rob Gronkowski, Sony Michel and James White were all at Wednesday’s practice as well. Gronkowski missed last weekend’s game because of a back injury. White suffered a leg injury against the Packers, but finished the game after coming off the field briefly.
Michel, meanwhile, appears to be making progress after his Week 7 knee injury. According to ESPN, Michel is on track to return this weekend in Tennessee as long as he as a good week of practice and doesn’t have a setback.
THE PATRIOTS attempted to boost their pass rush, but fell short.
After being released by the Oakland Raiders this week, edge rusher Bruce Irvin signed a one-year deal with his hometown Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday. After signing, Irvin told ESPN that the Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers offered him more money, but he wanted to play for Atlanta.
Irvin, 31, has three sacks this year.
THE PATRIOTS added to depth to their offensive line on Wednesday by signing Matt Tobin to a 1-year deal.
The 28-year-old has played both guard and tackle in the NFL.

Sunday Shift: What's It Gonna Take for the Patriots to Keep Trey Flowers and Shaq Mason?
For Flowers to end up in just the top-20 highest-paid defensive linemen, he'll have to top the $10.25 million AAV for the Green Bay Packers' Mike Daniels. But if Flowers has a career year in 2018 and tests the open market, he may be able to get something closer to top-of-the-market money. So although $11-15 million per season sounds like a lot of money for the Patriots to commit to one player not named Tom Brady or Rob Gronkowski ... if they landed somewhere in that range for Flowers, it would actually be reasonable compared to the landscape of the league. And - dare I say - team-friendly?
The question is, would Belichick be willing to shell out something like Hunter's deal to keep Flowers around? He's paid well over $10 million (in real cash) in a single season before. Richard Seymour earned an astronomical $24.6 million in bonuses in the 2006 season, although his cash earnings in his final three seasons with the Pats (2006-08) totaled $26.2 million - an annual average of about $8.74 million. Vince Wilfork made $19 million (including an $18 million signing bonus) in the first year of his biggest contract with the Patriots back in 2010, but over his final five years in New England he earned about $7.9 million annually.
Paying Flowers over $10 million in cash for 4-5 years would be fairly unprecedented for Belichick and a defensive lineman, but the Seymour and Wilfork contracts at least indicate that he's willing to pay up for a player he feels can anchor his positional group. There's also the fact that Belichick has paid near that amount for other mainstays, like Nate Solder ($9.15 million AAV from 2015-17) and Devin McCourty ($9.99 million AAV from 2015-17). Stephon Gilmore, whose signing was more of an outlier compared to other Patriots acquisitions, is set to earn $41.8 million from 2017-19, an annual average of about $13.9 million.
Sometime in the next eight months, we will find out whether Flowers is considered in that same vein.

Working against Flowers is that the Patriots' spending on the defensive line has been relatively paltry since the departure of Wilfork. They traded Chandler Jones, the only potential edge rusher since then who would get paid a big extension. The Patriots' cash spending on the defensive line is set to be $19.3 million in 2018, which would rank 23rd in the NFL. In 2019, it drops to $10.9 million, 25th in the league. So if they want to keep Flowers in the fold, they'll have to pay him almost 50 percent on top of their total cash spending in '19.
Also not working in Flowers' favor is the depth the Patriots have along the D-line. They signed Adrian Clayborn in the offseason, and they have Lawrence Guy, Deatrich Wise, and De... Apr 6, 2018
Egg Harbor: Flower shopping, candy shopping offer cheer
They are so pretty and smell so good and cheered me.I took my semi-annual trip to a doctor I see in Green Bay and enjoyed stopping at Kaap's Old World Chocolates. When I first came up here in 1970, I went to the original Kaap's in downtown Green Bay, before Port Plaza Mall was there. It had old booths that I learned are now in the Gallagher’s Restaurant in De Pere.Back then I loved the ice cream and sitting in a booth there, watching the dumbwaiter come down with new batches of candy. There were old glass cases full of chocolates.Years later, a friend took me to Manitowoc to Beerntsen's candy store, where we got nests with jelly beans in them and sunny-side-up candy eggs to put in Easter baskets for our kids. That was before I discovered Seroogy's in De Pere and Vande Walle's in Appleton. I may have to do some comparative tasting to see which one I like best. The Kaap's I visited is now just a shop in a mall and I was happy to find sugar-free chocolates. After my visit to the clinic — for a follow-up cancer exam which I passed with flying colors — I visited Schroeder’s Flowers in celebration of the good report. This is a route I follow each time I go to Green Bay, along with the nature center at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary or the Botanical Garden, and maybe a bakery or art store near there.Wisdom at the YThe "Wisdom Wednesday" program for April 11 at the Northern Door YMCA in Fish Creek is "Prevent Suicide Door County: Know the Signs" It will be presen...Nov 2, 2017
