Florist case reopens before Washington Supreme Court

Olympia, Wash., Nov 14, 2018 / 10:28 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Attorneys representing florist Barronelle Stutzman filed their opening brief with the Washington Supreme Court on Tuesday, as the court re-hears the case after its previous ruling was reversed. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court vacated a previous Washington state ruling against Stutzman, who in 2013 declined to make flower arrangements for a same-sex wedding. The U.S. Supreme Court sent the case back to the Washington Supreme Court, instructing that the case be reconsidered in the light of Masterpiece Cakeshop. In that decision, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with Christian cake baker Jack Phillips, who had declined to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. The Supreme Court ruled that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission had shown an impermissible hostility toward religion in their handling of the case. Stutzman's attorneys have argued that a similar hostility against religion was on display in the handling of Stuzman's case by...

Chocolatier creates flower-inspired dress made to eat for Chocolate Show

Chocolate, in Marine Terrace Mews in Kemp Town, Brighton, designed and made the flower-inspired dress for the Chocolate Show to be held at Kensington Olympia later this week. The design consists of a sculpted bodice, decorated with a combination of large and small discs of chocolate with digitally printed flowers in red, orange and pink. It has been finished off with gold leaf. It has been designed to be worn on the catwalk – but not for too long as it is likely to start melting. Ms Paxton used 800 of Paxton Chocolate’s delicate signature hand-made thin discs to decorate the figure-hugging, one-shoulder dress, which has a material underlay that was painted with chocolate. While it may seem an unusual move for a chocolatier to channel their talent into fashion, it is not the first time Paxton Chocolate has taken part. Ms Paxton said: “Last year we created a flapper-style dress for the fashion show, but this year we wanted to go for something that was really eye-catching and on trend. “For this dress, each of our thins will be hand-made and adorned with vibrant pictures of different flowers such as roses, daisies and nigella damascena. “The overall effect is really striking.” The dress took three weeks to create, with each thin made individually and stuck on using a heated spoon tech... Worms weaseling into your roses? Here's how to get rid of them

When I cut into the damaged stem there is a worm eating out the inner stem! Please help. P.P. OlympiaA. Sounds like the exciting life of a boring rose worm. This small, dull worm bores into a rose stem then proceeds to eat out the pith or center of the stem, protected from enemies. There is no spray that can reach the borer once it gets inside the rose stem. The most effective control is to hand pick the worms off of your rose plants now before they can bore into to stems.Cut the infected stems from the plant about an inch below where the wilting begins and the entry hole is seen. Do not compost the cut stems as the worm is most likely hiding inside. Place the boring worm and the cut stems into a plastic bag and send them for an exciting trip to the garbage can.Q. What happens if I use flower fertilizer on my vegetables? It is an old package of dry plant food made for flowers. How long is fertilizer good? W.T. RentonA. Your vegetables should thrive with an application of “flower” food as plants cannot read the labels and they just want the nutrients delivered to their roots. The vegetables that make flowers before they can be harvested, such as squash and tomatoes, will especially appreciate this fertilizer. The expiration date for plant foods depends on how it is stored. A package of dry or liquid fertilizer will be good for years if it is protected from extreme heat, cold and moisture. Q. What makes a better new lawn — seed or sod? N.H. AuburnA. Sod wins for instant gratification and a weed-fr... (The Olympian)

#TGW: Smelling the Flowers

Cayman Islands Cancer Society.Organizers have a knack for inviting Olympic swimmers to this epic fund-raising event ( https://flowersseaswim.com/olympians/), and Hart’s been invited before. She nearly did it before tragedy struck a friend, shortening her trip to the Caribbean in 2001.Finally, it was a blast, even for a former world-class sprinter asked to swim 1,000 meters on a Saturday and 5,000 more open-water meters two days later. As a matter of fact, Hart plans to make the event an annual part of her life.“Yes, absolutely …,” she said. “They’re so hospitable. It’s a great event, a great cause.”Plus, Hart knows people.Among participants on June 10 and 12 were a couple of her former Olympic teammates from the 2000 Games in Barcelona, Spain in Kristy Kowal (also a teammate/roommate at the University of Georgia) and five-time Olympic medalist Ian Crocker.Hart knew this event before finally participating in it. She was lined up to swim in 2001, in the summer after she won gold medals as a member of the 400-meter medley and freestyle relay teams in Barcelona.Shortly after arriving in the Caribbean, however, her mother called to let her know that a dear friend, former UGA pal Stephanie Conway, had just been in a serious automobile accident.Hart bee-lined back to the U.S. on the first flight available, and missed the Flowers Sea event. She was able to visit with Conway – who was not an athlete for the Bulldogs, but rather an Oregon native who had previously served as the Beavers’ mascot -- in... Flowers gone, Daffodil spirit still carries on

Kelty Pierce, recently met with members of Congress to speak on behalf of the Affordable Care Act.U.S. Rep. Denny Heck of Olympia recognized Pierce’s ability to reach an audience and invited her to Washington, D.C. to participate in a roundtable event. Through personal experience, the Puyallup High School graduate and University of Washington student has become an expert on health care. Cinthia Illan-Vazquez, a member of the 2012 court, was the featured speaker at this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration in Lakewood. Melanie Stambaugh, the 2009 festival queen, is serving her second term in the state House of Representatives.Like hundreds of princesses before them, these young women stepped off the parade float and are making inroads in many sectors of society. In this respect, the Daffodil Festival is holding fast to the best tradition has to offer, while letting some of the rest fade away. (The News Tribune)
