Pasma. “We are already seeing that things are changing,” he said. “Because of the devaluation of the pound sterling, people in the UK can spend less on flowers in euros.” However, he says he remains optimistic in the long run. “People in the UK will still put flowers on their table and they will still come from the Netherlands,” he adds. ...

Dutch Flower Group turnover up despite sterling pressure

Germany and Asia.DFG was pressured by Brexit and the decline of sterling, the FD said. Sales in Britain account for about €350m a year and the group operates several storage and processing facilities there.Sales this year so far lag those of 2017, with plant sales ‘dramatically’ low according to CEO Marco van Zijverden. He is holding out hopes for improved results around Mother’s Day on 13 May, which is the peak of the flower and plant year in mainland Europe.Consumers have become much more aware of sustainability issues when choosing plants and flowers, Van Zijverden told the paper. They want to know where flowers were grown and to be sure that no child labour was involved. Buyers also want to know about the growers’ social policies and use of pesticides.DFG hopes 90% of the flowers and plants it sells to be grown sustainably by 2020, up from 70% at present.

Shop local on Valentine's Day with these gift ideas

Here are Madison’s picks for Valentine’s Day things to do and gift ideas, in her own shop and beyond. Sterling silver jewelry from Ashley ProcopioWest Roxbury jeweler Ashley Procopio quit her day job to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams, and though her road to self-employmentdidn’t go exactly as planned (she ended up having to return to working full-time), today her handcrafted line of minimalist sterling silver jewelry is an Olives & Grace favorite, especially the daintystacking rings ($32). The local artisan will host a trunk show at the shop on Feb. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m.Wine at Haley.Henry“It doesn’t get much better than the old school playlist at Haley.Henry to get your night started,” Madison said. She recommends the snug Downtown Crossing wine bar as a cozy spot for a romantic night out, though she said the scene there is “open arms to couples and singles alike.” Diners can expect to graze on a selection of charcuterie, cheeses, crudo, and imported tinned fish while sipping on small-production and natural wines from all over the world. The Portuguese sardine board with potato chips at Haley.Henry.—Jonathan Wiggs/Globe staffAdvertisementHandkerchiefs fromThe Everyday Co.Custom-monogrammed handkerchiefs are a specialty from this sustainability-focused company that’s best-known for its hand-sewn napkins made from found fabrics. Madison recommends them as a twist on the pocket square for the men in your life, and the linen fabric option as a luxe upgrade.Stir classesMadison said home chefs should head to cooking classes at Stir, an intimate South End demonstration kitchen and cookbook store from chef and restaurateur Barbara Lynch. The creative class offerings range from “French country comfort food” to “Carnival in Rio de Janeiro,” and Stir’s cookbook series classes provide deep dives into recipes from popular cookbooks. Inspiration from“In the Company of Women”Madison suggests gifting this best-selling book ($35) about female business owners to creative entrepreneurs. As a woman running her own business, she finds the book to be a crucial source of motivation and positive influence. “I think it’s so important to have inspiration and support f...
