Boston Flower and Garden Show Offers Hope for Spring | Arts - Harvard Crimson

Small boutiques, food vendors, and galleries flanked either side of the trail of live displays. Some of these booths offered historical information: Plymouth 400’s “‘Our’ Story: 400 Years of Wampanoag History,” for example, chronicled the capture and enslavement of 27 Wampanoag men near modern-day Plymouth and Cape Cod.“This tragic and compelling backstory to the colonization of Plymouth has been long overlooked and comes to life in the exhibit’s dramatic images and video impact statements,” the exhibit’s panel read.Other exhibits included an art gallery from the New England Society of Botanical Artists, a shop selling Handmade Garden Mushrooms, a table of carnivorous plants, and an Ask the Experts Pavilion. Each day of the event also offered an assortment of different workshops, lectures, and demonstrations. With over sixty time slots across all five days, professors and other gardening experts shared their advice on everything from “Hip, Hip Hydrangea – Complete Primer for Identifying, Planting, Pruning and Maintenance” during the week to “Growing Cannabis Made Easy: A Quick Guide to a Legal, Personal, Cannabis Home Garden in MA” on the weekends. During the show’s peak hours, the lecture hall was at full capacity.Attendees Maureen and Rachel McNeil attribute the Boston Flower and Garden Show’s popularity to people’s anticipation for spring. “You go through a winter wher...

Put a Flower on It: The Art of Crafting Cocktails With Edible Flowers

At Lockhouse Distillery in Buffalo, N.Y., sakura gin uses local cherry blossoms for a uniquely floral Plymouth-style gin. "As far as gins go, it's very floral, to put that cherry blossom center stage," explained operations manager Cory Muscato. "People make the mistake of thinking it's going to be sweet, but you really get a lot of the juniper, citrus, and lemon peel as well." Lockhouse uses coconut flakes to give the gin that viscosity to recall the softness of rose petals. They also lend the spirit a back-end sweetness to balance a pungent rose aroma. "It's very similar to a London dry [gin], with a little more weight, a little more spice," Muscato explained. "After you try it on its own, it works really well in a Gimlet, a gin Cosmo, or even in a standard Negroni, since it really complements the vinosity of vermouth." Don't Forget to Garnish If you're just dying to use your own garden in your glass but want to keep things simple, Stewart also has a cute garnish trick up her sleeve. She calls it a "citrus raft." "Make a very thin slice of lemon or lime, and cut a pansy so that a little bit of the stem is attached to the flower," Stewart instructs. "Pull the stem through that little space in the center of the citrus slice and float that in a cocktail glass." That'll add visual interest to any floral cocktail. When using flowers to garnish, treat them the same way you would any other ingredient. Make sure they're food-quality and, of course, edible.

Love blossoms for Win a Dream Wedding couple at city florist

Flowers' extensive portfolio of work created over the years, which will leave any bride overwhelmed by the spectacular choices available. Jade told Plymouth Live: "Tania was so lovely and so helpful - she went above and beyond to show us everything we could possibly have. The flower I quite liked was out of stock but she quickly found me an alternative that I liked just as much if not more. She was really attentive because I went in there without a clue - it was not an aspect of the wedding I had ever thought about before." Honors Flowers is based and Peverell The mum-of-two added: "She guided me to find something that would perfectly match the dusty pink of the bridesmaids dresses and would be long-lasting. I took my mother-in-law along with me which was a lovely moment for her and together we chose beautiful pink, cream and ivory white roses. Tania is even putting together a flower crown or comb for our daughter Daisy which will match my bouquet and make her feel extra special." The team at Honors use their skills, expertise and experience to bring a bride and groom's vision together and even if they feel fresh flowers are not what they want, the team can also design silk, artificial flowers. The florist's designs are customised to suit individual tastes and budgets. Jade Curtis choosing her wedding flowers Owner Tania said: "It was lovely to meet Jade. We're so looking forward to creating the wedding flowers for their wedding. This was a preliminary first meeting to discuss the bride's chosen flowers so they're going to be coming back in again because she was a little undecided on what to have and quite overwhelmed by the choice. It's important to us that she doesn't rush the process at all. "We are more than happy to help guide them through their special day, in any way we can as we are all very passionate about our work here and want to make it perfect in every way." She added: "The wonderful thing about floristry is that everyday is different - you meet different people, you hear different stories and they want completely different flowers - it's why I'm so passionate about it." County Florists ready to help you “Say It With Flowers”

She purchases her flowers from “many different places,” but primarily from Len Busch Roses in Plymouth, Minn. She also secures flowers from M.J. Floral in Grand Forks, J.W. Perry’s in Fargo, and North American Floral in Sioux Falls, S.D..What does Dawn enjoy about her work as a florist? She likes Valentine’s Day! “I enjoy the holiday because it’s more people coming in and more people working. We have a good time.” She says she’s had the same employees for a number of years which helps to make the day go smoothly. She notes that Valentine’s Day has sort of become a two-day holiday – “The 13th is a pretty big day, too,” she says. She feels the customers help make Valentine’s Day an enjoyable day, “People are so understanding…Men are very patient waiting. They enjoy visiting with each other.”“Valentine’s Day is a rose holiday,” Dawn says, “The number one selling item for Valentine’s Day will be roses.” Dawn will definitely be prepared – she has eight hundred roses on order. She explains that Len Busch grows some of their own roses, but many of their roses will be coming from Ecuador.Dawn and her staff will have sample rose bouquets and mixed flower bouquets in a cooler up front. Duplicates of those bouquets will be ready in back. What advice can Dawn offer customers? She says to order flowers early, add fresh water to bouquets, and re-cut rose stems after a few days.Dawn is hoping for nice weather around February 14th. “Things get more complicated if it gets cold,” she says, adding that she sometimes has to meet a truck in Thief River Falls if the weather is too frigid.Jenn Durkee was trained on a government program almost 35 years ago at Princeton Floral.
