New remains discovered at site of famous Neanderthal 'flower burial' - Science Magazine
Q: How old are the new remains?
A: Solecki thought about 80,000 years, but we await dates from the [University of] Oxford [dating] laboratory. For now, the broad envelope of 60,000 to 90,000 years is about as good as gets.
Q: So, were the skeletons buried intentionally, with ritual, or not?
A: Ritual is almost impossible to prove to everyone's satisfaction. What is clear is that the cluster of bodies at the "flower burial" came to rest in a very restricted area, but not quite at the same geologic level, and therefore likely not quite at the same time. So that might point to some form of intentionality and group memory as Neanderthals returned to the same spot over generations. But I don't want to go beyond that, because most of the analyses are still to be done.
Q: What's the next step-are you trying to extract DNA from the bones?
A: Yes. We expect that modern techniques … will allow us to understand better the evolutionary relationships, group territories, and diet of these individuals. We are seeking funding for further work, because we have a whole season's worth of analyses to do, and we are aware of further Neanderthal r... Sep 10, 2018

Canada's oldest flower shop is changing locations – and owners.Gammage Flowers is closing the doors to its 747 Waterloo St. location as its owner, Judite Holder, is retiring. Aisha Saeed of Dundas Flowers now owns the shop, and it will move to a new location on Commissioner Road West. It's very good news, according to Holder."I've worked for a very long time. There was interest in the building, so it felt like the perfect time."The building on the corner of Waterloo and Oxford streets sold first, then the flower shop sold shortly after. There is interest in turning the building into a medical facility, Holder said.Holder's other businesses, including Razzle Dazzle Cupcakes, will stay in the building and are now owned by Holder's daughter."My hope was to keep all of the businesses in the family, but it is a huge job to take... Flowers ready to bloom at Oxford
Lincoln High grad JT Flowers has the world in the palm of his hand — or at least within his reach. Yale graduate. Bound for Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. Working as a field representative in the Portland office of Oregon Rep. Earl Blumenauer. "I can't describe how overwhelmingly thankful I am for the opportunities I've been afforded," Flowers says with a smile and a shake of the head. It wasn't that long ago that Flowers was a star forward at Lincoln, dreaming of a career in the NBA. Now, Flowers' ambitions stretch beyond the reach of sports. A career in government? A run at public office? Flowers knows only that, once he is done with collegiate pursuits, he will return to his city of origin. "I owe it to Portland and the state of Oregon to come back and provide a lifetime of work here," Flowers says. "My entire mission centers on increasing access to opportunity and social-economic mobility, ensuring that the circumstances a person is born into don't define the list of potential outcomes from birth to the grave. "How will that manifest itself? I haven't the slightest clue." … Flowers grew up five blocks from Jefferson High, the only child of Jeana Woolley. He has four half-siblings from his father, Billy Flowers, who helped Grant High to the state basketball championship in 1968-69 and played one season at Washington State. JT's parents never lived together, never married. He was raised as an only ...Dec 8, 2017
