County school music teacher killed in Tuesday car crash

An Albemarle County music teacher is dead and a Richmond man is charged with drunk driving after a two-car collision Tuesday on Fifth Street Extended and Harris Road. Eric Betthauser, 43, who taught music at both Western Albemarle High and Henley Middle schools, was killed when his Mazda 3 four-door sedan was struck by a southbound Chevrolet Camaro while Betthauser was turning left onto Harris Road from northbound Fifth Street Extended, according to Charlottesville police. Betthauser, of Charlottesville, died at the scene, police said. Following a preliminary investigation, police arrested the Camaro’s drive, Aaron A. Johnson, 27, of Richmond, on charges of involuntary manslaughter and driving while under the influence of alcohol. He was released Tuesday, following a bond hearing. Johnson is scheduled to be in court for the DUI charge on Jan. 12 and on Jan. 26 for the involuntary manslaughter charge, Charlottesville General District Court records show.
